VOLCANO - The board of directors for Mountwood Park met for the last time this year to discuss the coming event schedule and finances of the park facility for 2013.

Adjustments will take effect next year for some of the park's fees.

Board members recognized the need for funding in the aspect of marketing for the park, along the lines of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other types of social media. Board member Jean Ambrose said the group is working with Stonewall Marketing in utilizing social media.

Chris Swarr, left, previous secretary to the board and trails committee chair for the Mountwood Park Board of Directors, transferred his title of secretary to board member Andrew Borkowski, right, who joined the park board earlier this year.

"We're trying to straighten all of (the Facebook page) out so we can get it the way it should be," she said. "We're going to be coming back to you with some marketing costs."

Ambrose said board member Peggy Squires and new secretary of the board Andrew Borkowski have been an essential asset in an effort to use the potential of advertising through social media.

"We'd like to reserve the real estate on as many of these avenues as we can," Borkowski said. "There are all kinds of pictures and videos that are out there (of the park), and a lot of potential for some great things to promote the park and show how beautiful it is."

Prices for shelter rentals will remain the same in 2013, while a 10 percent increase will take effect for beach house rentals and some campground rates. Electric and water rates for the campground fees will increase in order to maintain the park's utility bills, said Wood County Parks director Jeremy Cross.

In other business, with the current administration's health care laws, the park voted to absorb an increase in interest rates for park employees to continue with the medical plan in place. There are about three employees benefiting from the plan, with the park now needing to budget about $5,400 extra for the upcoming year. Members of the board agreed to discuss the budget and finances of the health care plan early next year so as to move forward with discussions before the end of the year.

Some upcoming events at Mountwood Park for 2013 will include the Nature Trail Grand Opening in the spring, a mud run in the summer and the 24th annual Volcano Days in the fall. Visit mountwoodpark.org or call 304-679-3611 for more information.
