PHS girls, South boys earn wins

MORGANTOWN - The Parkersburg girls and the boys from Parkersburg South each posted victories here Saturday inside the West Virginia University Natatorium during the Morgantown/University Winter Invitational.

Parkersburg's girls, who are unbeaten thus far, didn't have an individual victory. However, the red and white received runner-up efforts from Claire Collett in the 200 freestyle, Sarah Snider in the 500 freestyle and Hannah Wareheim in the 100 breaststroke. Collett and Wareheim joined Alexa Standley and Tara Foster on the winning 200 medley relay team.

PHS finished with 384 points to win the title while Morgantown took runner-up honors with 320.

Snider took third in the 200 freestyle. The Big Reds also got top-five individual efforts from Wareheim (third, 200 IM), Jen Standley (fifth, 200 free; third, 100 free), Foster (third, 100 fly), Collett (fourth, 100 back) and Lacey Dulaney (4th, 100 free).

Parkersburg South, which took 10th with 98 points, had top efforts from Emily Gersper (fifth, 200 IM; third, 100 breast) and April Kirk, who finished fifth in the 500 freestyle.

The Patriot boys posted a winning effort of 405 points to top Morgantown's effort of 359.5. The PHS boys were third with 342.

Parkersburg South's lone victory for the boys was earned by Kinzie Bailey in the 500 freestyle. Bailey also took fourth in the 200 freestyle.

PHS had a pair of double winners thanks to Sean Snider (200 free; 100 fly) and Preston Padden (50 free; 100 free). The duo of Padden/Snider along with Nic Cheuvront and Stephen Cottrell topped the field in the 200 freestyle relay. Peyton Hughes swam with Snider, Cheuvront and Padden in their triumphant effort in the 400 freestyle relay.

The victorious Patriots also had top-five showings from Garrett Fink (second, 200 IM; third, 100 fly), Garrett DePergola (second, 100 breast; third, 200 IM), Lane Burton (fifth, 200 IM; third, 100 back), Corey Johnson (fourth, 100 free) and Joe Miller (fourth, 500 free).

Parkersburg, which returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 27 at the Brooke Invitational, also got a runner-up in the 100 backstroke from Hughes and a pair of fifth places by Stephen Cottrell in the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke.

The Patriots, who also will compete in the Brooke Invitational, will swim on Thursday back at the WVU Natatorium against University and Morgantown.
