BELPRE - Not quite perfection, but the Belpre girls delivered three-plus quarters of solid effort and won their fourth consecutive game after defeating Southern 74-56 on Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 34 points early in the fourth quarter while improving to 5-2 and 3-2 in the Hocking Division of the Tri-Valley Conference.
"That was probably the best three quarters of basketball we've played in a long time," Belpre coach Scott Miller said. "At times, that's the team that I want to see. We didn't play scared - we took it to them."

Emily Hughes also got in on the act for Belpre.
In the third quarter, the senior connected on her only two attempts from the floor, including a 3-pointer which ignited an 18-4 run to open the second half and leave Southern trailing 59-26.
Emily Hughes delivered one of her four assists on a Lexus Cunningham bucket which gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the game at 68-34 early in the fourth quarter. Cunningham, who was recovering from an illness, finished with 10 points.
"I'm very pleased with the way our team passed the ball around, cut to the hoop and played solid defense in the first three quarters," Miller said.
Southern, which is coached by former Parkersburg High girls assistant Scott Cleland, dropped to 2-4 and 1-4 in the TVC Hocking Division despite a first half double-double from freshman post player Jansen Wolfe.
Wolfe finished with 24 points and 18 rebounds. Her partner in the paint, Celestia Hendrix, added 11 points and 10 boards.
Southern junior Sarah Lawrence, one of three returning starters from last season, has not played a game since breaking her hand during the summer.
"I am still frustrated, but we will continue to work on trying to have post players play post defense," Miller said.
Belpre seeks a fifth straight victory Monday at South Gallia.
"I like the progress we're making," Miller said. "They are in the upper echelon of our league. If we play like we did tonight for the first three quarters, we will be fine."
