Parkersburg South boys second in Wheeling; Big Red girls dominate at Clarksburg Invite

December 9, 2012
Parkersburg News and Sentinel

WHEELING?-Parkersburg South's boys swimming team finished as the runner-up on Saturday at the Wheeling Park Invitational.

The Patriots of coach Steve Lutz amassed 124 points, but that wasn't enough to keep up with champion Linsly, a private boarding school, which took home the team trophy with 167 points. Morgantown was third with 83, followed by University 71, Wheeling Park 46, and John Marshall 27.

Although South didn't win any individual events, it did have three second places as Lane Burton was the runner-up in 100 backstroke and also participated on the second place 200 medley relay team along with Garrett DePergola, Garrett Fink and Kinzie Bailey. The quarter of Corey Johnson, Joe Miller, DePergola and Fink placed second in the 200 freestyle relay, a big event for South, which also got a fourth-place finish from the team of Casey Dye, Brady Starcher, Evan Clark and Ryan Pritchard.

Third place finishes for South included Miller in the freestyle, Fink in the 100 butterfly, Bailey and in the 500 freestyle and Johnson in the 100 freestyle.

Fink took fourth in the 200 IM, Miller was fourth in the 100 backstroke and the team of Miller, Pritchard, Bailey and Johnson was fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.

In the girls competition, South's short-handed team scored 36 points, placing sixth. Wheeling Park won the meet, beating Morgantown for the top spot, 135 to 118. Williamstown was seventh with 21 points.
