Dennis, Mitchem lead South past Linsly

PARKERSBURG - Talk about shooting the lights out!

Senior Doug Dennis had a game in just one quarter Saturday night, as the 6-foot guard canned four treys in the first 3:35 of the fourth quarter and went on to post a 20-point period to help propel Parkersburg South to an impressive 79-65 season-opening triumph over visiting Linsly at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.

But key too to the Patriots' victory was a second-quarter comeback from a 13-point, 33-20, deficit in the final four minutes of the first half to slice the Cadets' lead to just four, 37-33, at intermission.

After a back-and-forth first five minutes of the initial quarter, Linsly scored 10 of the last 12 points in the period including eight by Anthony Wallace - the final six on two treys - as the Cadets surged into a 20-13 advantage.

From 33-20 down in the second stanza, South got a lift from Cody Monroe with a personal six-point run and Wes Mitchem launched a 35 to 40-foot shot at the buzzer that went in to reduce the margin to only four at the half.

In the third quarter, Mitchem, who finished with 22 points, continued to put in the points, tallying 12 of the Patriots' 19 in the period, as South went ahead to stay, 45-43, on Kyle Thompson's hoop at the 5:07 mark. The Patriots expanded that to 52-43 before a late eight-point Linsly flurry made it only a one-point, 52-51, affair heading to the fourth quarter.
