PARKERSBURG - A water line valve break caused traffic congestion close to Memorial Bridge on Garfield Avenue Thursday.
The break caused three lanes of traffic to be reduced to two, officials said.
Mayor Bob Newell said Parkersburg utility board crews were working overnight Wednesday when a significant valve broke underground. Newell said the dangers of water on the roadway were ice and potential for the roadway to collapse.
"It's something we couldn't wait to replace," he said of the valve.
Parkersburg utility board manager Eric Bennett said crews were repairing a water line at 20th Street and Ohio Avenue during the overnight hours on Wednesday. In the process of the maintenance a water line break occurred around 24th Street as well.
Bennett said working on old pipes can cause other issues. "It would have caused ice on the road," he said.
Crews expected to finish their work Thursday night.
