ELIZABETH - Preseason Class A No. 3 St. Marys never trailed here Friday night as the Blue Devil girls basketball team of head coach Howard Meeks doubled up host Wirt County, 76-38, in the season opener for the Pleasants County program.
The Tigers, now 0-2 with a road trip next Friday to Clay County, had no answer for the "Twin Towers" duo of St. Marys posts Audra Clark and Kendra Walker. Clark bucketed a game-high 20 points, which included hitting 12 of 16 from the foul line, while Walker tossed in 15 points, grabbed eight boards, had eight steals and a pair of blocks.
Clark's foul shot just 23 ticks into the tilt put the Blue Devils ahead for good and it was 7-0 after Walker, Mikaela Britton (10 points) and Shanley Glover dropped in deuces. Wirt County managed to make it a 13-8 affair with 3:25 left in the opening stanza when Liz Adams, who led the orange and black with 16 points, scored on a lay-in from a Katie Leadmon assist.

Mikaela Britton of St. Marys pressures Wirt County’s Amanda Clark during the Blue Devils’ 76-38 road win Friday night in Elizabeth.
However, the Blue Devils scored the next nine points and that included a steal and a layup by Rachel Miller, who finished with five points and seven thefts. A putback basket by Adams made it 22-10 heading into the second quarter, but turnovers plagued the hosts all night. The Tigers finished with 43 turnovers and had double digits in every quarter except the first when they had nine.
A 6-0 spurt early in the second quarter by the Tigers that featured a Kayla Kinney hoop and two more field goals from Adams made it 24-16 at the 5:31 mark, but the hosts never got any closer. Despite going a span of 7:14 without a field goal, St. Marys was able to extend its advantage to 34-18 by hitting 10 of 15 foul shots.
A three-point play by Britton made it 37-19 with 32 seconds left before intermission. It was 39-21 at the break after Blue Devil Dani Moore and Tiger Taylor Watson, who had seven points and as many caroms, traded baskets in the waning seconds.
