Marquette women top Marshall

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - In the first meeting between the two teams, Marshall lost to Marquette, 67-46, to open up the A&M Classic on Friday afternoon.

The Thundering Herd dropped to 2-2 on the young season, while Marquette improved to 2-1.

Despite holding a plus-12.3 rebounding margin on the season, Marshall was out-rebounded by the Golden Eagles, 51-36. The difference led to 20 second chance points for Marquette.

Foul trouble haunted Marshall as the Thundering Herd sent Marquette to the free throw line 18 times and the Golden Eagles added 12 points from the stripe. Contrarily, Marshall only visited the free throw line twice and missed both attempts.

Chukwuka Ezeigbo led Marshall, earning her second double-double in of the season, totaling 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also added a team-high two blocks and two steals.

Freshman Norrisha Victrum also netted 10 points, going 4-for-9 from the field and 2-2 in three-pointers.

LSU 71, No. 12 West Virginia 63

MIAMI (AP) - Freshman Danielle Ballard scored a career-high 25 points as LSU knocked off No. 12 West Virginia 71-63 Friday night, handing the Mountaineers their first loss of the season.

After 12 ties and 10 lead changes, the Mountaineers got within 65-63 with 1:42 left. The Lady Tigers (2-2), coming off back-to-back losses at Hampton and Georgetown, held them scoreless the rest of the way.

Ballard made a layup and Theresa Plaisance was 4 for 4 from the free-throw line to seal the win in the FIU Thanksgiving Classic.

Leading 38-36 with 18:08 left, the Lady Tigers went cold, failing to score for more than 4 minutes. However, West Virginia (3-1) scored only six points during that span, and LSU quickly regained the lead.

West Virginia, which came in holding opponents to 49.7 points per game, was led by Taylor Palmer with 15 points. Ayana Dunning, who transferred from LSU, scored 11.
