Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

November 24, 2012
Parkersburg News and Sentinel

UP: To the Salvation Army and the more than 40 volunteers who helped make Thanksgiving a special day for those in the Mid-Ohio Valley who otherwise were unable to enjoy the holiday. The meals were open to all residents and were served in Pleasants, Ritchie, Calhoun, Wirt, Jackson and Wood counties. In addition, a thumbs up to all the community dinners held by area churches and other organizations.

UP: To the annual appearance of the Salvation Army's red kettles at various locations in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Bell ringers have manned the kettles since Nov. 9 and will be at their stations until Christmas Eve. The money raised helps pay for the Salvation Army's yearly gift giving for children and food baskets.

UP: To all the shoopers who got up early on Friday morning and stood in line in the cold waiting to hit the stores for Black Friday bargains. We hope shoppers found the bargains they were hunting.

UP: To the opening of the Holiday in the Park light shows at both City Park and Southwood Park in Parkersburg and Civitan Park in Belpre. The seventh annual Barlow Area Christmas in the Village will be held Dec. 1 with the lighted Christmas parade with the Festival of Lights at the Barlow Fairgrounds open from 6 to 9 p.m. every day in December. The light shows display the beauty of the season and help us get into the spirit of the holiday.

UP: To all of the runners of all ages who spent Thanksgiving morning at City Park for the 34th running of the Turkey Trot.
