Authorities investigating hunting-related death

PARKERSBURG The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is investigating the death of a hunter in Ritchie County, the agency said.

Joe Clayton, 73, of Smithville, W.Va., died Monday of an apparent heart attack while hunting near Hazelgreen Road, said Hoy Murphy, a spokesman for the department, said. State Police handled the initial investigation.

Deer firearms season opened on Monday. Clayton is the first hunting-related fatality of the season.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m.
