Southern food brings comfort

Georgia native Rebecca Lang draws on her southern roots for the new cookbook, "Souther Living: Around the Southern Table."

With gorgeous photos, this book is full of down-home comfort foods that are a feast for the eyes as well as the mouth, that will warm hearts and tummies.

The book is divided into several chapter, Sunup; Little Bites, Sips & Jars; Dinner Bell; From the Oven; Soup Spoons & Sliced Bread; Harvest Time; Sugar Bowls and also includes a chapter of sample menus.

Sunup includes breakfast foods like Puffy Grits, Buttermilk and Brown Sugar Waffles and Honey-Pecan Coffee Cake. Little Bites, Sips & Jars are appetizers, beverages and homemade condiments like Brown Sugar-Bacon Wrapped Scallops, Blackberry Mint Julep and Spiced Tomato Refrigerator Jam. Dinner Bell is a collection of main dishes like Lowcountry Boil, Chicken Bog, Bacon-Covered Roasted Turkey, Pecan, Bourbon and Cane Syrup Ham and Stuffed Meatloaf. From the Oven is casseroles, breads and biscuits like Garden Green Bean Casserole, Puffed Chicken Pot Pie, Bacon-and-Swiss Bread Pudding, Sweet Potato Biscuits and Lace Cornbread. Soup Spoons and Sliced Bread and soups, stews and sandwiches like Tomato-and-Roasted Red Pepper Soup with Cheddar Croutons, Rich Corn Chowder and Ham Salad Croissants. Harvest Time are salads and sides like Heirloom Tomato Salad and Marinated Asparagus and Pecan Salad. Sugar Bowls ends things with desserts like Real Banana Pudding, Pound Cake from Heaven, Six-Layer Caramel Cake and more.

For a quick lunch one day, I decided to make Grilled Cheese and Tomato Sandwiches. Labeled "fancy grilled cheese" by my kids, these sandwiches made use of Havarti cheese and sharp cheddar cheese. The youngest discovered she is a big fan of Havarti and ended up eating the leftover cheese on the side.

The tomato added a little something extra to the flavors, as did serving this on multigrain bread. The girls loved this simple lunch, and I loved the different cheese on it. It was a quick, no fuss lunch that we all enjoyed.

"Around the Southern Table" is published by Oxmoor House. It is $29.95.
