I would like to respond to Jennifer Raber's letter about people speeding through the school zones at Lubeck Elementary. My advice is to conduct a meeting with other parents and school officials to discuss options for figuring out how to deal with people speeding in the school zones after school is out for the day. Also, I recommend someone who has a video camera to record the incidents and then turn it over to the police for them to review the footage, that way you have proof that this is an issue that needs to be dealt with.
If Raber wishes, she can get a petition started so she can take it to the city and hopefully it can be looked into. If nothing else, Raber can ask people in the neighborhood to volunteer to monitor the school zones while the kids are being let out for the day and if they see anyone speeding through the zone, they can try to write down the license plate number, but it would take more than one person to do this. Or better yet, take a photo of the license plate with your cell phone first then write it down and hand it to the police so the person who was speeding can be dealt with.
There are lots of options to deal with the issue so I hope Raber has a lot of success in getting this issue resolved. The issue of people speeding through school zones does need to be resolved and soon before a child is hurt or killed because someone has to speed just to get to his or her destination.
