PARKERSBURG - West Virginia state player of the year candidate Hannah Shreve finished with a finals match-high 10 kills, but it wasn't quite enough for George Washington here Saturday night inside Memorial Fieldhouse as host Parkersburg knocked off the Patriots 25-23 and 25-21 to capture the Mountain State Athletic Conference volleyball tournament.
Big Red Kaitlin Farrah was credited with match point when teammate Morgan Armstrong's spike was blocked and then the Patriots were called for a lift. Paige Warner had eight points, six kills and three aces while Imani Ward had a team-high nine kills for Parkersburg, which had to settle for a runner-up finish at last year's MSAC tournament.
"Our serving, our hitting, our defense, our setting, our blocking all looked so much better," said PHS head coach Carl Harnish, who got a combined 16 assists from setters Lyxis Reeder and Jordan Lallemont. "I think they really did a great job. We had a great day and I was so proud of the way they played."

Parkersburg led 22-17 in the first championship set, but GW battled back behind to within one at 22-21 thanks to a Casey Rollins kill, a Shreve downed spike and kill block along with a Jordan Wittekind ace. However, Warner made a pair of plays at the net to give the Big Reds the first set in the best-of-three match.
Lallemont, who had four kills in the second set including a pair of second-hit downed spikes, helped PHS jump out to a 13-8 cushion along with help from Ward at the net. The Patriots refused to give in easily and thanks to Shreve's play at the net, GW setter Sydney Downey collected four service tallies to later square things at 18. A Patriot unforced error then gave the red and white the lead for good. PHS actually scored four straight to take control thanks to a Lallemont kill and ace along with a downed spike from Alex Dils via an Alison Schumacher assist.
Downey finished with 12 assists, six points and an ace. Rollins added three kills while Lexi Mourier chipped in two points and a pair of kills in the setback.
