Glenville State 29, W.Va. State 12
GLENVILLE - Host Glenville State didn't have a turnover and Rahmann Lee scored three touchdowns here Saturday afternoon at Morris Stadium as the Pioneers knocked off W.Va. State, 29-12, in West Virginia Conference action.
Michigan transfer Justin Feagin made his first career start, filling in for injured Pioneer signal-caller Darold Hughes, and hit 7 of 18 passes for 159 yards while adding 60 yards rushing on 10 attempts.
Lee's 34-yard TD catch from Feagin with 2:02 left in the opening quarter put the Pioneers ahead for good, but the score was just 6-0 as Colston Bayless had the first of two extra points blocked. A 5-yard scoring burst by Lee, who finished with 92 yards rushing and 78 yards receiving, with 13 seconds left before intermission gave the G-men a 12-0 cushion entering the second half.
Although the Yellow Jackets (2-5, 1-3) needed just 46 seconds to score in the third quarter - thanks to a 73-yard pass from Ricky Phillips to Ervin Kent - the extra point was blocked by Hunter McWhorter as GSC maintained a 12-6 cushion.
Lee added a 1-yard plunge in the third and Bayless converted on a 32-yard field goal to give head coach David Hutchison's Pioneers a 22-6 lead entering the fourth.
Quin Thornton, who finished with 101 rushing yards on just five attempts, had an 84-yard TD jaunt with 8:15 left in the contest to cap the scoring.
Glenville State's Devin Cain and Gary Henderson combined for 14.5 tackles and five tackles for loss while Nate Ingersoll had an interception.
The Pioneers, now 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the WVIAC with a road game set for 1 p.m. next Saturday at W.Va. Wesleyan, held State to 83 yards rushing on 45 attempts. Jacket Aubura Taylor had a game-high 103 yards, but toted the pigskin 30 times.
West Liberty 17,
No. 25 Shepherd 16
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - Bobby Cooper hit Billy Brown on a 28-yard touchdown strike with 93 seconds left in the game, but No. 25 Shepherd missed the extra point as host West Liberty shocked the Rams, 17-16.
Shepherd, which suffered its first WVIAC loss, watched Hilltopper Dylan Lagarde throw for 242 yards.
Rod White's 6-yard pick-six gave West Liberty a 7-0 cushion in the first quarter. Ram Ryan Earls' 31-yard field goal midway through the first period was matched by Jeff Hoak's 37-yard boot as WLU still led 10-3 at 1:54 of the first.
Shepherd squared it with 12:20 left in the first half on a Mike Haynes 1-yard burst, but the Hilltoppers went ahead for good when Kenjay Trueblood capped the next West Liberty drive with a 19-yard TD run.
Charleston 42,
No. 24 UNC Pembroke 30
PEMBROKE, N.C. - Charleston bolted out to a 21-3 lead and never looked back as the Golden Eagles picked up a 42-30 road win versus No. 24 UNC Pembroke.
Jordan Roberts rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing a 31-yard TD pass to Shaq Williams just before intermission.
Golden Eagle Ahmed Shakoor also had a 38-yard blocked punt return for a six-pointer.
Fairmont State 49,
W.Va. Wesleyan 32
FAIRMONT, W.Va. - Fairmont State overcame an early deficit en route to a 49-32 victory over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Bobcats opened the scoring when Brian Vukela recovered a fumble and rumbled 24 yards for a touchdown just after the midway point of the first quarter. The Falcons' Johnny Dearstine made it 7-3 after booting a 21-yard field.
WVWC made it 14-3 when Lavaughn Hughes hauled in Jeremy Musselman's 15-yard pass with 13:53 to play before halftime. Dearstine later connected on field goals of 35 and 38 yards to make it 14-9 with 4:59 left in the half, but the Bobcats answered when Musselman found Hughes for a 12-yard strike 30 seconds later.
FSU pulled within six when Matt Wilmer caught a 35-yard pass from Bobby Vega with at 9:52 of the third. After a WVWC field goal, Vega completed two more touchdown passes in the third frame to make it a 28-24 lead for the home squad. The touchdown strikes covered 24 yards and 47 yards, respectively. Charaun Goodwin and Wilmer had the receptions.
Wilmer was on the receiving end of another Vega pass just six seconds into the fourth quarter for a 35-24 advantage.
The Bobcats pulled within three after Musselman found Nyquan McGirt for a 12-yard strike with 12:23 to play. FSU pulled away over the final six minutes as Goodwin caught a touchdown pass and Daniel Monroe, who had 147 yards on 25 attempts, rushed in for a score from 17 yards out.
Vega threw for 275 yards and five touchdowns while Wilmer caught seven passes for 163 yards and three scores.
Seton Hill 29, Concord 26
GREENSBURG, Pa. Seton Hill led most of the way, but dropped a 29-26 contest to visiting Concord.
The Griffins got on the board with 7:07 left in the first quarter when Andrew Jackson connected with Niko Hall-Brown for a 14-yard touchdown, but the kick failed.
SHU increased its margin to 13-0 when Jackson found Mike Allen for a 45-yard score, but Concord got on the board in the second quarter when Calvinaugh Jones rushed for a 16-yard TD.
Jackson quickly answered, throwing his third touchdown pass of the first half when he found Lance Williams from 31 yards out. Up 20-7, the Griffins' defense was unable to stop CU just before half. Ben Nester scampered in from 2 yards out, making it a 20-14 contest at halftime.
With 12:06 to play in the third frame, Jackson hit Allen for a 10-yard touchdown and a 26-14 advantage, but Evin Dusold's pass to Ansel Ponder pulled the Mountain Lions within five, 26-21, with 6:49 to play. Darrick Williams hauled in a 10-yard pass from Dusold with 5:20 to play, allowing CU to complete the comeback.
Jones finished with 123 yards rushing in the victory while Jackson had four TD passes and 265 yards through the air.
Ohio Northern 56,
Marietta College 14
MARIETTA - Ohio Northern put up 21 points in each of the first two quarters here Saturday afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium and rolled to a 56-14 victory against host Marietta College, which dropped to 0-6.
Carter Paul rushed for a game-high 120 yards and scored three touchdowns while teammate Tate Humphrey passed for three touchdowns and ran in for another score. Humphrey connected on 14 of 21 passes for 271 yards.
ONU, now 4-2, led 28-0 before Linard Williams' 48-yard TD reception from Tom Fulton. The only other Marietta College score came on a Kirby Harris 6-yard TD catch from Fulton midway through the third quarter.
Fulton attempted 55 passes, completed 25 and was picked off three times as he finished with 290 yards. Harris had game-highs of nine catches for 120 yards in the setback. Pioneer Sean Mumfield added three receptions for 65 yards.
Marietta College, which was led by Tevin Dones' 57 yards rushing, returns to action at 2 p.m. next Saturday with a road affair at Wilmington College.
