Big Red netters split home tri

October 12, 2012
By STEVE HEMMELGARN (shemmelgarn@newsandsentinel.com) , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

PARKERSBURG - Host Parkersburg High played visiting George Washington to the hilt before dropping a 32-30 decision to the Patriots in the first game, then fell behind from the outset of the second game and never caught up in falling 25-17 as GW swept the Big Reds in a volleyball tri at Memorial Fieldhouse Thursday night.

Both PHS and George Washington had dispatched Philip Barbour earlier to set the stage for the evening's finale, and the Big Reds and Patriots didn't disappoint - especially in the first game, which was a nail-biter.

GW led 8-5 only to see PHS rally back to go ahead 9-8 on a Paige Warner spike. The Big Reds then extended their advantage to 12-9, but the Patriots regained the edge at 14-13 and kept it until PHS ran off four straight points to surge in front 22-20.

Parkersburg's Imani Ward spikes the ball against Phillip Barbour Thursday evening. The Big Reds defeated Phillip Barbour, 2-0.

Ties at 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 ensued, the last on a Warner spike, before GW got a point to move ahead and Hannah Shreve won it for the Patriots with a clinching spike.

The second game saw GW, now 21-7-3, lead all the way, building as much as an 11-point spread at 21-10 on Tori Strong's serving ace. But that was to be the apex of the Patriots' lead as PHS tallied the next five points to close the gap to 21-15. However, GW then scored three of the next four points to open up an eight-point gap, 24-16, and take command again, culminating two points later on a Shreve spike for the match-winner.

The Big Reds, now 50-23, along with George Washington and Musselman will be playing in a 12-team tournament Saturday in Roanoke, Va.

In the opening match of the night, PHS rolled to a 25-12, 25-13 win over Philip Barbour, followed by GW besting the Colts as well by scores of 25-12 and 25-11.

Imani Ward led the Big Reds versus Philip Barbour with 8 points, followed by Lyxis Reeder with seven, while Ward and Warner each had 8 kills.

Against GW, Jordan Lallemont led the scoring with 7 points, with Warner having 8 kills, Ward 7 and Alexandra Dils 5.

''We had a chance to win that first game (against GW), and we kind of blew it,'' said veteran PHS head coach Carl Harnish. ''We didn't get our serves in when we needed to. In fact, twice we had game point, but missed serves and they came back and beat us.

''Then we didn't start off the second game very well, but came back and played a better game at the end.''

He admitted ''that big, tall girl (Shreve) up front for them hurt us. You hit it to her, she can block you. We needed to get her to move or move the ball around her. She's a good player. She's going to WVU on a scholarship.''

Still, ''I was proud of the way our girls played,'' said Harnish. ''We're getting better. We've just got to play better defense and serve better, and we'll be right in there with the rest of these people if we do that.''
