UPDATE:
A man has been arrested for the death of a 3-year-old boy taken to the hospital on Sunday.
PARKERSBURG -A toddler at the center of an investigation of possible child abuse has died.
Parkersburg Police Sgt. Greg Collins said the 3-year-old boy passed away about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
The toddler was critically injured Sunday at the home of its mother. He was taken to Camden Clark Medical Center and later taken by medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Detectives from the Parkersburg Police department and Child Protective Services were called by Camden Clark personnel and are conducting an investigation.
Collins said the level of injuries warranted an investigation. He said police often get requests from hospitals to look at a case, sometimes for obvious reasons, sometimes out of caution.
"Our goal is to find the truth, be it accidental or criminal in nature," he said.
The mother advised the child was hurt while playing in their home, Collins said. Police have not released the names of the individuals involved.
Collins said investigators are conducting interviews. An autopsy will be performed, he said.
"That's crucial," Collins said.
