MIDDLEBOURNE -The 29th annual Middle Island Harvest Festival will take place Oct. 5-7 at the Tyler County Fairgrounds.
The event opens at 10 a.m. Friday, which is designated as student's day. Special activities and exhibits will be held primarily for students. A pumpkin decorating contest will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with judging set for 6 p.m.
The Harvest Princess contest will take place at 7 p.m. in the Log Building. Participants may register by calling 304-758-2415, and all participants must be a Tyler County resident between the ages of seven and 10.
Saturday's events kick off with a breakfast at 8 a.m. at the fairgrounds. Cider making by the Tyler FFA Chapter will also take place.
A car, truck, rod and custom show will be held take place, with registration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the show running until 4 p.m. For more information, call 304-758-2667.
Horse show pitching will take place at noon, a bow shoot at 1 p.m. and bingo at 2 p.m. The big pumpkin will be auctioned at 2 p.m., and soup beans and cornbread making will take place throughout the day.
A baking contest will be held Saturday, with entries submitted to the White Barn. Categories include one cake, two pies, 12 cookies, one quick bread, six muffins and 12 candy pieces.
The festival concludes Sunday with breakfast at 8 a.m. An antique tractor show and rodeo will begin at 1 p.m., as will a muzzleloader shoot. Rifles only are permitted, with no scopes. Bingo will take place at 2 p.m.
Pork loin and grilled chicken will be available at noon, and the 9th Annual Ohio Valley Junior Beef Association Fall Harvest Show will begin at 1 p.m. Check-in begins at 11 a.m., and all cattle must be in place by noon.
Daily attractions include sorghum and apple making demonstrations, corn meal grinding, antique engine displays, flea market, working crafts, arts and crafts, portable sawmill demonstration, chainsaw artists, big pumpkins and hay wagon rides.
Admission is free, and those attending should bring a lawn chair.
