ELIZABETH - Wirt County Sheriff Keith Wilson is asking residents to be on the lookout for individuals asking for donations in the name of a local church.

Wilson said the department is receiving reports of individuals going door-to-door asking for monetary donations for local churches.

None of the local churches are running door-to-door campaigns, Wilson said.

"The pastor of the church they are claiming to represent called and said someone called him. He told them they are not collecting," Wilson said.

Wilson said the suspects are going door-to-door in Elizabeth in the evenings.

"We have only found one person who has contributed money," he said.

"We do have a number of suspects," the sheriff said.

Wilson said anyone who has been approached by the suspects or has given money is advised to contact the sheriff's office at 304-275-4222.
