South falls in four

September 21, 2012
By JAY W. BENNETT (jbennett@newsandsentinel.com) , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

PARKERSBURG - Kasey Williams had match-highs of 13 points and 11 kills Thursday night inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center, but it wasn't enough for host Parkersburg South as University posted an 8-25, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-23 victory.

Head coach Don Godfrey's Hawks, who were swept at home earlier this season by the Patriots, looked like they would have an unhappy bus ride home after being dominated in the opening set of a dual Two Rivers Athletic Conference/Ohio Valley Athletic Conference match.

However, that turned out to be far from the case for the Hawks (7-3, 4-2 TRAC), who got a team-high 12 points and 16 assists from Savannah Bryner along with a team-best seven downed spikes from Lexi Kolar, who also chipped in four service points and a pair of aces.

It appeared as though Parkersburg South was going to force a decisive fifth set after going ahead 19-13 in set four following a pair of service tallies from Taylor Ratliff (10 assists, four points). Bryner, the Hawks' setter, got the momentum going for her team when she used a second hit to register a kill as University ran off 12 of the final 16 points.

Although a Sara McPeek kill gave Logan Somerville a point and kept the Patriots' fourth set cushion at six with the scoreboard reading 21-15, the Hawks turned it up a notch and took advantage of five consecutive PSHS miscues to close the gap to 21-20.

University's Karlee Lobban tallied six of her eight points in that span and she was toeing the service line when Kolar had a kill block and then registered a downed spike to push the Hawks in front 22-21.
