HUNTINGTON - Former Marshall softball players Rachel Folden and Amanda Williams will compete against their alma mater as they were a part of the 12-person roster announced by the NPF that will compete against Marshall.
The game, scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start next Tuesday in Charleston at Appalachian Power Park, is part of the 2012 National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) Back to School Tour.
The exhibition will pit the current Thundering Herd softball team against an experienced NPF roster that features national champions and former Olympians.
Williams, who is currently the assistant coach for the Herd, says this experience is a unique challenge for her as she will play against the girls that she coaches, "Playing against my own team will be interesting because if I do not perform I will not hear the end of it."
Joining Williams on the NPF roster will be Folden, a four time All-American at Marshall from 2005-08. The two last played together during the 2011 NPF season when they won a league title with the Chicago Bandits.
"Being back on the same team with Folden will be a blast as she is such a competitor and one of the best hitters in the game," Williams said.
Kelly Kretschman and Jenn Salling are two of more notable names that will travel to Charleston. Kretschman played for the United States in the Olympics twice, including the 2004 squad which won golf. She also was a four time All-American. Salling played for the Canadian National Team and participated for her home country in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Additional highlights on the team include Ashley Charters, a national title winner while at Washington and member of the USA National Team. Andrea Duran is one of three former Olympians on the squad; she was also a two-time champion at UCLA.
"Playing in the NPF Back to School Tour and against Marshall is going to be a great experience not just for me but the fans and the athletes,' Williams added. "Some of the best players in the world will be taking the field and I hope that Herd fans will pack the park for this awesome event."
