Obama blind to reality

July 29, 2012
Parkersburg News and Sentinel

If you had any doubt that Obama is leading us down the path of socialism all you have to do is read his speech which he gave in Roanoke, Va., last week. In this speech he said "if you have a business - you didn't build that. Someone else made it happen." He said "the self-made man is an illusion, if you were successful; somebody (the government) along the way gave you help. Somebody invested in roads and bridges."

He said, you have an education, someone else built the schools. He gives the individual no credit for the hard work which went into getting an education and building a business. When he says somebody else helped you get whatever success you have - by somebody he means the government. All of the help successful people might have gotten from the government is available to those who were not so successful. But not every individual had the desire, ambition and drive to become successful. To not recognize all the long hours and hard work an individual puts into building a successful business is refusing to give credit to the entrepreneurial spirit of this country and to what has made us a successful nation.

Al Gore is accused of claiming to have invented the Internet. Now Obama tells us that "Government research created the Internet" What I read is that in the '70s Xerox developed the first personal computer out of their PARC labs in the Silicon Valley. According to a book about Xerox, by Michael Hiltzik, Xerox realized they couldn't wait for the government to develop different networks so they would have to do it themselves. This resulted in Xerox entering into a venture capital agreement with Steve Jobs who then launched the Apple computers using concepts developed by Xerox, not the government.

Ayn Rand's book, "Atlas Shrugged," is a story about how government officials, who thought like Obama, over-taxed and over-regulated business to the extent that those business leaders just gave up and said to the Obamas of that time - here, you take my business I can no longer deal with all of the control you have over my business. To which the government officials said no, oh no, we don't want your business we just want to tell you how to run it. Then we want to tax all of your profits and spend it on non-productive individuals for the good of mankind.
