LaVeta Hanlin, 79, of St. Marys, W.Va., passed away on July 7, 2012, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus.
She was born July 26, 1932, in the Glendale Community of Ritchie County. LaVeta was the daughter of the late Grace and A.B. (Andrew) Lowther.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Coach Bill Hanlin; two children, Mike of Miami, Fla., and Kathy McHenry (Ron) of St. Marys, W.Va.; one grandson, Nate McHenry; three step-grandchildren, Colleen, Marie and Brian; three step great-grandchildren, Xander, Teddy and Connor; and a brother, Bob Lowther (Genelda). LaVeta also gave much love and care to many of her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Zula, Zela and Sara Nell.
A graduate of West Liberty University (BA) and West Virginia University (MA), LaVeta was a retired elementary school teacher. She taught in Tyler County, W.Va.; Shadyside and Ashland, Ohio; College Park, Md.; Glenville, W.Va.; and 25 years in Pleasants County.
Her many hobbies included Bible Study, reading, quilting, bridge, gardening and supporting and attending the many high school and college football games her husband coached over the years. She was also a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, 40-year member of the DAR, W.Va. Retired Teachers Association and the SMHS Endzone Club. LaVeta was a 19-year volunteer for Journey Hospice in Sistersville, W.Va.
In 1957, LaVeta joined St. Marys United Methodist Church, where the family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Saturday. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary followed by lunch. The Rev. Pamela S. Shuman, Pastor SMUMC will preside. The church is located at 104 Washington St., St. Marys.
We who knew and loved LaVeta know her quality of life was important to her and that she has many loved ones in heaven. She will truly enjoy these reunions with family, friends and her Heavenly Father.
