Marietta girls first, boys second at Noon Lions meet

April 29, 2012
By JORDAN HOLLAND , Marietta Times

MARIETTA - The Marietta High track teams protected their house well Saturday at the annual Noon Lions Invitational, as the girls' team placed first in the 11-team field, while the boys finished second overall.

"We're very pleased with the performance," girls head coach Mollie Schramm said. "It's nice to do it at home."

Paige Grosel paved the way for the Marietta girls, placing first in the 200 meter dash and the 4x400 meter relay, along with teammates Sarah Studenic, Abby Ketelsen and Erica Dawson.

"Paige did great," Schramm said. "She does anything you ask her to. That's the kind of kid she is, and that's what it takes to win."

Dawson also finished first in the 300 meter hurdles and second in the 100 meter hurdles.

Ketelsen and Studenic teamed up with Julie Fobes and Brittany Deskins to win the 4x800 meter relay, the first event of the day.

The Marietta boys followed that up by winning the second event of the day, as Alex Wesel, Mitchell Grose, Josef Brack and Samuel Garrison placed first in boys 4x800 meter relay, to the Tigers off to a fast start.

Wesel also took first place in the 1600 meter run, but it was not enough to trump Logan High, who took home first place.

The Chieftains' Seth Vermillion won the 800 meter run, while Adam Azbell was victorious in the 200 meter dash. Logan also triumphed in the 4x200 and 4x100 meter relays, en route winning the tournament.

"Logan, from top to bottom, is just a great program," said Marietta boys head coach B.J. Mayer.

"I was pleased with finishing second," the coach continued. "The kids really worked hard today, and it showed. It was a total team effort."

Warren and Parkersburg High each had a solid showing at the meet, as well. Warren's girls finished second, led by Raelyn Gardner's victory in the 100 meter hurdles and Halle Richards' win in the 1600 meter run. The boys finished third, paced by Wes Cochran's first place finish in the 3200 meter run.

For the Big Reds, the girls had a third place finish, while the boys were fourth. Kaylee Williams won the 800 meter run for the girls, while Evan Rhodes was victorious in the 300 meter hurdles.

For the Marietta High girls, it was the third year in a row that they came away with first place at the Noon Lions Invitational, one of the area's most competitive events.
