Wheeling Central topples Crusaders, 11-4

April 15, 2012
By STEVE HEMMELGARN (shemmelgarn@newsandsentinel.com) , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

PARKERSBURG - Eight runs in the first two innings started defending Class A state champion Wheeling Central on the path to an 11-4 win over host Parkersburg Catholic in a West Virginia Catholic Classic baseball game called by rain with one out in the bottom of the sixth Saturday afternoon at City Park.

The Maroon Knights not only batted around in the first frame and then sent 10 men to the plate in the second, but also took advantage of five walks and two errors by the Crusaders to open up a quick 8-0 lead.

Five of Central's nine hits in the game went for extra bases, with four doubles and a triple. Mic Keys' two-bagger knocked in the Maroon Knights' first run and Andrew Keane singled in their other two first-inning tallies before RBI doubles by winning pitcher Anthony Tighe and Brandon Gast in the five-run Central second inning that also saw two runs come home on a PCHS error and another on a fielder's choice.

The Crusaders, though, bounced back with a 3-spot in their half of the second, loading the bases with one out on Austin Luther's infield single, Payton Sturm's walk and Mike Hinton being hit by a pitch. A Maroon Knight fielding error with two outs plated one run and then back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Jake Boice and Bobby Casto forced in two more runs.

However, Central added a run in the third inning with a base-runner scoring from third as PCHS tagged another Knight runner out in a rundown between first and second., and tacked on one more in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Gast to lead 10-3.

Casto singled in a run for the Crusaders, now 9-6, in the PCHS half of the fourth, and second baseman Luther pulled off a nifty double play in the top of the sixth, snagging a line drive with a diving stab and then tossing the ball to shortstop Mitch Davis at second for the twin killing. But the next Central batter, No. 9 hitter John McFarland, who collected three hits in the game including the Knights' triple, dropped an RBI single into right field for the game's final tally.

''They jumped out on us quick,'' said PCHS head coach Tom Harvey, ''and we didn't come fired up today. I think our kids were resting on their laurels after a big (9-8 comeback) win last night (over Madonna), and you can't do that against a good program like Wheeling Central. We didn't adapt our approach to their pitcher, who was changing up his delivery on us. We were tying to hit six-run homers when we needed base-runners. We just have to play smarter baseball.''
