Parkersburg boys win first place

Morgantown girls take home title

April 15, 2012
By JIM BUTTA (jbutta@newsandsentinel.com) , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

PARKERSBURG - First-year Parkersburg head track coach Kenny DeMoss and his Big Red boys continue to perform feats that no other boys track team at the school ever has accomplished.

Earlier this year, PHS won the championship of the Kim Nutter Classic. On Saturday, the Big Reds claimed the title at the 15th annual Clear Channel MOV/Russ Parsons Invitational. It marks the first time any Parkersburg High boys track team ever has won both meets.

"We've got some great athletes and some great event coaches that are making me look really good," explained DeMoss following his team's 159.33-103 win over runner-up Musselman. "Winning this one is especially nice because we were able to do it in front of our fans."

Parkersburg’s Andrew Lyons, left, and Nick Cheuvront, center, lead the pack during competition in the 800 meter run at the 15th annual Clear Channel MOV/Russ Parsons Invitational at Stadium Field on Saturday. Lyons won the event and Cheuvront was second to lead the Big Reds to the team championship.

The Big Reds received individual victories from Landon Miller in the 400 (52.45), Andrew Lyons in the 800 (2:06.82), Nick Musgrave in the 3200 (10:17.16) and Brandon Pethel in the discus (141-2) while the Big Reds 4 by 200 meter relay foursome of Evan Rhodes, Adam Lindamood, Landon Miller and Chandler Hamilton crossed the finish line ahead of the pack in a time of 1:33.66.

"The kids are doing a great job of competing in every race," said DeMoss.

"We have a lot of balance between our field and track points and I think that has made us a better team than people thought we would be at the beginning of the season."
