MARIETTA - A clutch two-out, two-strike, two-run triple in the last of the sixth off the bat of Tim Grosel proved to be the game-winner as the Marietta Tigers downed the Parkersburg Big Reds 8-7 Friday evening in a non-conference battle at Legion Field.
Grosel's triple allowed the Tigers to avoid losing a game in which they led by five runs at one time before allowing the Big Reds to come all the way back to take a one-run lead heading to the last of the sixth.
PHS got on the board first off of Marietta starting pitcher Geno DeMaio in the top of the third inning on an RBI double by Garret Riley.
The Tiger bats came alive in their half of the third as they batted around and hung a six spot on Parkersburg starting pitcher Jake Gold.
Joe Roberts led the inning off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Corey Spanner, who promptly stole second base. Shortstop Jordan Satterfield followed with an RBI single before Eli Lenington doubled to left to make it 2-1. After Ben Bricker reached on an error, Nick Spurr doubled in two more runs and a sacrifice fly by Jon Cremeans and a wild pitch gave the Tigers a 6-1 lead.
A pair of Tiger errors, a couple of hit batsmen and a walk, coupled with RBI singles by Chase Evans and Tony Brunicardi knocked DeMaio from the mound in the fourth inning and tied the game at 6-6.

Spanner once again came into pinch run and held at second when Lenington's hard shot to third was knocked down by third baseman Will Salmans for an infield single.
One out later Grosel stroked the game winning shot down the left field line off of Big Red reliever Jeff Davis to send the orange and black back in front for good.
Ben Barnas replaced Leister on the mound for the seventh and fanned the final two Big Red hitters to seal the deal for the Tigers.
Devin Leister was credited with the win, his first at the high school level, allowing only one hit and striking out four in his three innings on the mound.
PHS, which plays Monday at Warren, dropped to 3-10 on the season with the loss. Marietta (6-6) has a twinbill today at New Philadelphia.
SOFTBALL
Waterford 14, Trimble 10
WATERFORD - The Waterford High softball team picked up its eighth win of the season Friday in a 14-10 slugfest against the Trimble Tomcats.
It looked like it was going to be a long night for the Tomcats after two innings. Nicole Neslein scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. Janelle Pugh followed with a double to center that scored Amber Reed. Tori Pyatt and Cierra Heiss each added an RBI of their own in the inning. Overall the Wildcats (8-4) scored five runs in the inning.
After a scoreless second for Trimble, Waterford came out and put up two more runs, without getting a hit in the inning. Lakyn Tolson and Neslein each reached on Tomcat errors. After Reed sacrificed the runners over, Tolson scored on a wild pitch and Neslein scored on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Offenberger for a 7-0 advantage.
Trimble (1-10) got one run back in the third, and then came roaring back with an eight-run fourth, capped off by a two run double by Kelsi Brown.
Now down 9-7, Waterford would have to muster a comeback of its own.
They began chipping away with a run in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and two outs Megan Smith had a pinch-hit single to left, driving in Pyatt.
The Wildcats, who enterain Megis today, took the lead with a three run fifth inning. Neslein drove in Laura Hill and Tolson on a single up the middle. Neslein later scored on an error, making it 11-9.
After Trimble tacked on another to make it a one run game, Waterford sealed the win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Hill picked up the win on the mound, pitching a complete game and striking out three while walking two.
