The third annual Brandi Kay Bowen Scholarship 5K will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Cline Stansberry Stadium in West Union and the Rails-To-Trails.
The race is conducted in honor of the memory of 2007 Doddridge County High School graduate Bowen. A standout athlete at the school, Bowen was a shining light to all those who came in contact with her. After graduating from Doddridge County, she became a student at Glenville State College, where she was a member of the Pioneer track and cross country teams. In February 2009, she lost her life in a tragic auto accident.
In her memory, her parents have established the Brandy Kay Bowen Scholarship Fund designed to carry on her legacy. The fund is managed by the Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia.
Last year, the event raised more than $2,700, thanks to numerous donations as well as race participants. Once again, the race is seeking sponsorship donations needed to cover the cost of T-shirts, trophies and post-race refreshments. Any leftover funds will go directly into the scholarship fund.
