Get laughs with new releases

November 6, 2011

Get ready for some laughs, just in time for the holiday season. Give a funny book to a friend this year!

Everyone at work knows I'm addicted to the Cake Wrecks blog, a blog dedicated to unintentionally fun cakes done by "professional" bakers.

They can be anything from unrecognizable decorations to misspellings, etc.

The photos are sightings from ordinary customers who see something just plain crazy or aren't exactly happy with what they ordered.

Jen Yates, the creator of the blog, previously released a collection of favorite and new "wrecks" in "Cake Wrecks: When Professional Cakes Go Hilariously Wrong." Now, just in time for the holidays is "Wreck the Halls: Cake Wrecks Gets 'Festive.'"

This holiday book spans from Halloween and "ghost goosing spiders" and "vampire pilgrims." Next up is Thanksgiving, and the funny or just plain wrong looking turkeys, pilgrims, cornucopias and even the "interesting" way footballs turn out.

There's a section on bizarre family gathering cakes and how licensed characters can sometimes end up. Then the book gets to the big holiday - Christmas. There's heart-shaped Christmas trees, surfing snowmen, half-finished candy canes and the many, many ways in which you can mess up Santa or make him look frightening. There's gross looking reindeer, not quite right gingerbread men and much more. There's also a section on Chanukah cakes and cookies that just don't look right.

The book winds up with a section of New Year's cakes including a frightening baby New Year cake and ends with strange bakery signs.

This is one of those books that are hilarious coffee table books that you can page through over and over again for a laugh.

"Wreck the Halls" is published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. It is $14.99.

Continue the fun with strange photos of families with their furry (and otherwise) friends in "Awkward Family Pet Photos" by Mike Bender and Doug Chernack.

Founders of the Awkward Family Pet Photos website and New York Times bestselling authors of "Awkward Family Photos" the authors take the readers on a visual journey of just how much families love their pets.

There's professional portrait sessions with dogs and cats as wells as opossums, monkeys, squirrels, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, even skunks and snakes!

There's also plenty of funny photos of dogs, cats, birds, farm animals and exotic pets like monkeys, leopards, raccoons, lizards, snakes, marsuipals, frogs, rats, ferrets, cougars and much more.

The book is also punctuated by stories from pet lovers, stories of "behind the awkwardness" where the photo submitter includes the back story and even holiday cards with people and their pets. There's lots of love for animals and lots and lots of laughs.

"Awkward Family Pet Photos" is published by Three Rivers Press. It is $15.
