UP: To those who remember to set their clocks ahead Saturday evening in preparation for the arrival of Daylight Saving Time. While we may lose an hour of sleep this weekend, it means more time in the coming spring evenings to get outside and enjoy the hopefully warmer temperatures.
UP: To longtime West Virginia University at Parkersburg spokeswoman Connie Dziagwa. Dziagwa, who has been with the school for 32 years, announced she will retire in the spring. She has been an integral part of the school's growth during that time and has been an able spokeswoman during her tenure. She will be missed and we wish her well in her retirement.
UP: To children's author Marc Harshman for his visit this week to Franklin Elementary Center. The Wheeling-based Harshman, author of nearly a dozen books for kids, spoke to students about how to use descriptive language in their writing efforts.
DOWN: To James "Scott" Walraven and his wife, Shenandoah. The Walvarens were sentenced to six months in jail this past week for several charges in connection with a graduation-birthday party they hosted for their daughter and her classmates last June at a Belpre residence. During the party, at which the Walravens furnished alcohol to underaged teens, a fight broke out and 19-year-old Lamarr Wilder was stabbed and died. Athens County resident Cameron Lucas, 17, admitted to the stabbing but claimed it was self-defense. A juvenile court judge dismissed this notion and a disposition hearing for Lucas will be held later this month. However, we agree with Lucas's attorney Rolf Baumgartel that the Walravens bear the responsibility for this tragic incident. While we understand why Prosecutor Jim Schneider agreed to a plea deal, a stiffer sentence would have sent a stronger message.
DOWN: To the person who called in a bomb threat at Parkersburg High School this past Tuesday. While no bomb was found, students were rightfully evacuated and many were picked up by parents. This disrupted a day of learning and we hope whoever is responsible is caught and punished.
