Vienna credit union robbed

March 9, 2011

VIENNA - Police are searching for a man who robbed a Vienna credit union at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon.

The male suspect entered Blennerhassett Federal Credit Union, 302 29th St., around 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, brandished a handgun and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money, said Sgt. Rick Berdine with the Vienna Police Department.

Police described the suspect as 5 feet 7 inches tall, 150 pounds, a black male, wearing a hooded sweatshirt, dark boots and dark-colored pants. He was carrying a paper bag, police said.

A video surveillance camera captured images of a robbery suspect brandishing a gun inside the Blennerhassett Federal Credit Union in Vienna.

Original reports indicated the suspect fled on foot, but officials later searched for a blue or black SUV, police said.

Wood County Sheriff's Office aided the Vienna Police Department in the search for the suspect Tuesday. The FBI also is investigating, said Berdine.

"We had numerous units out, including two of our captains and myself," said Wood County Sheriff Jeff Sandy. "We did not make any arrests."

A male driving a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's vehicle was pulled over on Grand Central Avenue by Vienna police around 3:30 p.m. The vehicle was searched but no arrests were made, said Sandy.

Employees and patrons of nearby businesses said they had no idea the credit union had been robbed.

A man who came out of the credit union less than 15 minutes after it was robbed said he had no idea what had happened.

The security guard at Johns Manville, caddy corner from the credit union, was in the back of the building and saw nothing of the holdup.

Employees of Pete and Libby's Auto Repair also missed the incident. This included a customer who was waiting in her van in front of the auto repair business.

"I had my nose in a book," she said.

Those with information about the robbery can call Vienna police at 304-295-8563.
