PARKERSBURG - Students throughout the valley will be taking an extended break next week for Thanksgiving.
Wood County Schools students will have a full week off for Thanksgiving beginning Monday. Classes will resume Nov. 29.
The Thanksgiving holiday week traditionally has been a source of concern for Wood County Schools. Due to calendar and scheduling restrictions, the Wood County Board of Education in recent years has tried a variety of scheduling options, including a limited number of instructional days during the week.
However, attendance during those days, both by students and by staff, had traditionally been dismal.
"We had an outcry from our parents and our school community," said Sue Woodward, assistant superintendent of school services. "Not only is it hunting season for some people, it is also a week of travel for a lot of families."
Woodward said the school system also struggled to keep enough staff on the roads and in the classroom during those days. Last year, however, changes in state law gave school systems more flexibility in assembling their calendars, allowing the school system to set aside an entire week.
