GLOUSTER, Ohio - An Athens County man was arrested Friday in connection with his own shooting after allegedly attempting to steal from his father.
The Athens County Sheriff's Department reported that the 911 dispatch center received a call at 5 p.m. Friday about shots being fired at the residence of Hubert Thomas, 74, of 18561 Taylor Ridge Road in Glouster.
A few moments later, Thomas called the 911 center and said he had shot his son Matthew Thomas, 25, of the same address.
Hubert Thomas said Matthew Thomas entered the residence and tried to steal his father's pills when the two got into an argument. During the argument, Matthew Thomas began to hit Hubert Thomas and threatened to kill him. While they were struggling over a gun, the weapon went off, according to the statement of Hubert Thomas.
Matthew Thomas left the residence and was treated and released for a minor wound at O'Bleness Hospital in Athens.
After he was interviewed, Matthew Thomas was informed that he would be arrested. At that time, Matthew Thomas allegedly attacked Capt. Bryan Cooper with the Athens County Sheriff's Department.
Following the attack, Matthew Thomas was arrested and placed in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail. The charges against Matthew Thomas were not released Saturday. According to the SEORJ website, Matthew Thomas was arrested on a felony charge of burglary.
Following the arrest, search warrants were executed on the Thomas residence and evidence was obtained. Additional charges will be discussed with the Athens County Prosecutor's Office Monday, the sheriff's office reported.
