WILLIAMSTOWN - Lawn ornaments have been taken and destroyed from homes throughout Williamstown.

The Williamstown Police Department is investigating incidents where yard gnomes, yard ornaments, bird feeders, bird baths and other items have been removed from people's yards, said Barbara Lewis, police clerk and Williamstown City Council member.

In some instances, the items were removed from the person's yard and at other times, the items were found nearby, in some cases destroyed, Lewis said.

''We are not happy about this,'' she said, adding she has been receiving complaints from city residents.

The incidents have been occurring for three to four weeks across the city, mostly at night.

Lewis said some of the items taken have had considerable weight to them.

''Some of these things had to have a couple of people to move them,'' she said.

Residents are being advised to keep their eyes open to report suspicious activity. Police are continuing their investigation.

''These are things people care about,'' Lewis said. ''If people have any precious items outside, they need to take them inside.''

Anyone witnessing the crimes can call 304-485-8501.
