Don Reeves is the choice to be the next football coach at Parkersburg High School.

A former Parkersburg High quarterback who guided the 1978 Big Reds to the Class AAA state championship and an assistant coach at the school for the past three seasons, Reeves was informed on Monday his recommendation will be submitted to the Wood County Board of Education for its approval on Feb. 11.

Reeves was one of three finalists. Also in the running was Craig Farnsworth, a former Big Red quarterback who served as an assistant coach at PHS from 1993 to 2001 when he became the interim head coach and led the Big Reds to the state championship, and Bob McIntyre, who had a successful tenure at Pittsburgh Central Catholic.

The finalists were interviewed by a selection committee of Principal Ralph Board, Athletic Director Richard Lance and former athletic directors Mike Hayden and Jim Hamric.

Read the whole story in Tuesday's edition of The Parkersburg News and Sentinel.

Its was there earlier today.

The delay might not change anything, but hopefully it will clear up was a vote taken or not.

Someone besides Board needs to talk to the paper.

Unbelievable Some of you take sides with a guy who left under a cloud in a hurry over two men who have devoted their entire career to the children of Wood County without reproach and only dedication. Thank you Mr. Board and Mr. Reeves for standing strong.

Reeves will be put before the Board to be head coach. 3 of the search committee recommended Farnsworth and the principle overruled and said this is who we are recommending for the job. This supposedly was a foregone decision long ago when the job came up. No reason to go through the dog and pony show when it was fixed to begin with.

When Coach Reeves left South Ralph had asked Coach Buttrey to add Reeves to his staff. Buttrey didn't want to do it but he gave in to Board and added him to the staff. Ralph & Donnie have been close friends for many years. He wanted to put Donnie in position to take over when Buttrey retired. Since he has been on staff he struggled as both Offensive & Defensive Coordinator. He was unable to make a decision. Other coaches had to do it for him this caused problems among the staff. Much of the problems of the past two seasons was lack of confidence in Reeves. Ralph told Reeves the day Buttrey resigned that the job was his. People close to the program just couldn't believe it. He will have a very hard time putting together a staff that can win. I have spoken with 2 coaches who were on the staff last year they are very disappointed and told me about the problems of the past 2 years.

Reeves became an outsider when he refused to help the stadium committee at phs when asked and when he crossed the river and coached at south. no offense to south at all but a true Big Red wouldnt have done that. As far as him playing on a state championship team. Go look at the picture in the fieldhouse and see who all made up that team. He certainly didnt win it himself. So look at the facts here. He played under Buddy James. So did Craig Farnsworth. Craig coached with Marshall Burdette who himself had a .742 winning percentage. Reeves junior high/middle school record means nothing at this level. Maybe this summer he can scrimmage Jackson. The football team deserves better coaching than Reeves. So long McCullough the first to go. The rest of them will ride along on Reeves coat tails just like they did Bernie. If they are smart they will jump off now! The ship is sinking!

looks like we don't have a choice. being a former big red . doesn't make you coaching material if that's the case maybe mark kimes could be the coach in his spare time.

I have advice for everyone who is not happy with Reeves being named coach. I know you are not happy, but please keep in mind that Reeves is a "Big Red." He is not an "outsider" like Buttrey. Also, Reeves was the QB for one of Parkersburg's state championship teams. Please do not treat him like dirt because he doesn't deserve that from his fellow Big Reds. All Parkersburg alumni are entitled to their opinion, but don't stoop to the level of some South alumni who turned on one of their own (former South coach Rich Williams), a few years ago.

everyone is right! it doesnt make sense to hire Reeves. It doesnt make sense to have an advisory board if you are going to let ralph board strap on his feather plume he wore in his band days and march in there with his mind already made up. i would love an open forum to see what he possibly has for justification to hire don reeves over a much more qualified and an obviously better choice in Farnsworth. let Ralph Board go to the board office i am sure they can make him in charge of planning the lunch menus or something.

The committee was nothing more than a smoke screen.

Board knew going into the interviews that Reeves would be HIS next coach regardless of what Hayden, Hamric, or Lance said.

Nothing against Reeves, but a 3 to 1 vote says alot when the 3 all have been hired to run Parkersburg High School sports and have coached Football.

This was a power play move, and I hope it comes back to bite Board in his butt on Feb. 11th.

It's blatantly obvious now. Ralph hired the advisory committee to make it look like it was a fair shot for all. But then it backfired and EVERYONE on the committee the said Farnsworth and Ralph says thanks but my mind is made up. What does Ralph know about football he never even played sports he marched in the band!

The community is in uproar and I dont know how Reeves is going to find enough coaches to fill a staff.

The advisory committe wanted Farnsworth, the Stadium Committee wanted Farnsworth, the players wanted Farnsworth, the parents wanted Farnsworth, 80% of the community wanted Farnsworth, the faculty at PHS wanted Farnsworth, big time donors wanted Farnsworth............but Ralph Board wanted Reeves??????????????????? The firestorm has only begun!

I don't get it. If 3 of the 4 people on the board chose Farnsworth, how did Reeves get it? I thought majority rules. How is it that Ralph Board's vote trumps everyone elses?

Lets look at the differences in Reeves coaching staff to be vs. Farnsworth coaching staff to be. Farnsworth's staff: Rick Phillips, Steve Grimm, Steve Parker, Mark McCullough, Allan Johnson, Matt Kimes, Marty Prine, Gary Eakins, and a few others. Reeves staff: Murray Mace, Jason Woodyard, Billy Cottrill, Matt Kimes????, Gary Eakins????. No comparison what so ever! Farnsworth would bring PHS back to prominance.

This is not over. The next few days will be interesting. Unless the board overrules incompetent Ralphie, the Big Reds are going to be losing some HUGE supporters that have fat wallets.

Don Reeves is a Big Reds and that is about it.

Reeves couldn't coach himself out of a wet paper bag.

This isn't Jr. High where the biggest kid just runs over people.

Ralph Board really messed up Big Reds Football for years to come.

Hopefully the Wood County Board of Education tells Board "NO" on Feb. 11th.

Its a sad day when 3 people that knows sports votes for Farnsworth, but a principal with only 1 vote can ruin the sport for the entire school.

Donnie knows middle school football; however it takes more than that to win at the high School level. Quick trivia question, name one coach who has one a AAA State Championship in Football whose majority coaching experience was in Jr. High Football? The answer: 0 and according to the master reporter in Wheeling none have even reached the quarterfinal. I just finished talking to a friend who coaches for South Charleston and he laughed fit 20 minutes. Big Red Football deserves the best coach, not the best Ralph Board kiss up! Bring on the investigation.

Way to go Mr. Board!!!!!!!!!!!! Three of the 4 on the committee recommends Craig Farnsworth, and because of your NO.....it "automatically" goes to Reeves...since it is YOUR final say who gets it.....Why even go through this tainted process if it is decided beforehand...What a disgrace! Shame on you.

I am a PHS Alum that has always believed that the head coach for the Big Reds needs to be an Alum. While Coach Reeves was at Jackson Jr High, he gave me the opportunity to be a position coach along with Coach Maxwell & Coach Rogers who were my coaches when I played for the Generals. I observed the passion that Coach Reeves has for the game plus the ability to get young players focused on their assignments and play as a team. I have high respect for Coach Reeves and I'm thrilled he is going to be the head coach of the Big Reds in which he has great passion for. I have witnessed the integrity of Coach Reeves and I believe the players will play hard for him. GO BIG REDS!
