Disney offers park tickets for volunteers

Pamela Brust
POSTED: January 19, 2010

PARKERSBURG - Disney is offering a one-day free park ticket in exchange for volunteer labor at a participating agency or charity as part of a program called "Give A Day, Get A Day."

The project kicked off Jan. 1 and runs through the end of the year, or until a million tickets to U.S. Disney parks are given away. The program is nationwide and the tickets will go fast, said Wendy Tuck, director of the Volunteer Action Center, who is partnering with Disney locally on the volunteer reward project.

"We just think Disney is terrific for doing this. It's very exciting. Just think, a million tickets they're giving away," Tuck said.

So far, the VAC has received nearly 100 volunteers who want to participate in the program.

"You have to do meaningful service to a qualifying agency. Some agencies are requiring a full day, eight hours of service, but they just want a meaningful opportunity so theses agencies get their projects done. They want the volunteers to also have a good experience. The agencies, organizations, in order to qualify, have to have their 501-(3) (c) tax exempt status, they can be subordinates of large local nonprofits, schools, health care organizations, governments, parks and recreation, faith-based organizations, as long it's not a religious service. All the information is listed on the Web site: www.disneyparks.com," Tuck said.

Tuck said the VAC has several volunteer opportunities with the Willows, the Humane Society of Parkersburg, Ohio Valley Health Care Center, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army.

Any group or organization that qualifies and would like to participate can contact Tuck at the VAC, by calling 304-424-3457, Extension 110. "The volunteer projects cannot be fundraising related or training," she said.

Tuck said this would be a great project for a group or a family to do together.

"We have some OU student volunteers coming over to help with the Habitat for Humanity house, so they'll each get a free trip," Tuck said.

Volunteers wishing to participate need to first register at the Web site: www.disneyparks.com. There are lists of opportunities on the site.

"They can then sign up for a project through the Volunteer Action Center. The VAC will confirm the volunteer's participation and the volunteer will receive a coupon from Disney within two weeks. We'd like to get this information out to the community so that they can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity that Disney is offering," Tuck said. "Disney is a partner with Hands On Network, of which the VAC is a member."

Anyone over the age of six can volunteer, but adults, generally parents or guardian, must volunteer with the child and not all volunteer opportunities would be available for children.

I agree, if someone is allready planning a trip, this would be a graet value, or if someone wanted to get the ticket and donate it to someone, that would be cool too.

Suzukirider was righ about the quote:

"We have some OU student volunteers coming over to help with the Habitat for Humanity house, so they'll each get a free trip," Tuck said. (end quote)

Either way, I can't afford to go to Fl, but if someone has family down there, it would be nice to get the ticket and give it to them.

Wendy Tuck is quoted saying "free trip"

Do keep in mind the average trip is $2000-$3000.

Never said I wanted anything. Just to clarify some of the details that got missed by those providing the information

If you can read, it says several times that it is a day ticket to the park. An 80 dollar value, still more than a lot of people make in a work day, so a NICE thing. Obviously it is for folks who may already have been planning a trip to Orlando. What do want Suzukirider, you want them to fly you there and put you up too for doing ONE day of volunteer work?? Unreal.

It is not a "FREE TRIP" to Disney. You receive a ONE DAY, ONE PARK coupon. It is an $80 value but you still have to get to Orlando. And there are not many options available in this area.
