BELPRE - Police are searching for a man who robbed a Belpre bank Wednesday afternoon and fled on foot after leaving a package on the counter that he claimed contained a bomb, officials said.

Law enforcement agencies surrounded Peoples Bank, 510 Washington Blvd., at 3:50 p.m. when bank employees reported the robbery.

"The man came into the bank, announced he had a bomb and demanded money," said Belpre Police Chief E.D. Clevenger. "He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money and left a small, red cardboard box on the counter, claiming there was a bomb inside."

The suspect fled eastward from the bank on foot before authorities arrived. Several agencies were called, including the Belpre Volunteer Fire Department and the sheriff's departments from Washington and Wood counties. The FBI was also contacted to assist in the investigation.

Wood County's bomb-sniffing dog accompanied by Parkersburg Fire Inspector Mike Beckett arrived shortly after 4 p.m. to search inside the bank and its outside perimeter.

"The dog did make a hit on the box, but we ascertained there was no bomb or incendiary device inside," said Clevenger.

Police would not say what was found inside the box, except to say it wasn't a bomb.

As a precaution, police cordoned off three blocks of Washington Avenue from Maple Street to Stone Road. After determining there was no bomb inside the package, authorities reopened the roads at 4:45 p.m.

"The package was small, but even a very small device can have horrendous consequences," said Clevenger. "You just never know. So we have taken every precaution."

Deputies from the Washington County sheriff joined the search for the suspect with its aviation unit helicopter that searched the Belpre area and the banks of the Ohio River for two hours.

"Right now we have about 10 or 12 of our deputies canvassing the area, but we're no longer using the helicopter," Sheriff Larry Mincks said later in the evening. "We have several deputies and members of our Major Crimes Unit who are involved in the search under the direction of the Belpre Police Department."

Investigators also interviewed employees Wednesday afternoon and obtained surveillance footage from the bank's security cameras.

Belpre police and the FBI were working together on a possible lead Wednesday night, but no new information was released, said Sgt. Terry Williams with the Belpre Police Department.

"We may have a name of a suspect soon, but we are working on trying to confirm it with the surveillance tapes," Williams said. "We still don't have anyone in custody."

Police described the man as white in his 50s wearing a brown leather jacket, a dark colored ski hat with a white emblem and tennis shoes. He was about 5-foot-10 with a slender build and a goatee, said Clevenger.

They guy they got at Walmart was a different guy. Just a copy cat. What was interesting WCSD was on the scene before Vienna PD and made the arrest.

Way to go Woodyard.

Ranger how come you post on every article about robbery in Pburg. Are you planning a caper yourself? And when someone disagrees with you "They must work at a plant."

Ranger what was on your application that made you so undesirable for employment?

There is no excuse for robbing a bank. No matter how desparate you are. All you do is scare the people working or doing business in the bank. But then again most criminals are only worried about themselves not the victims.

Hang in there ranger, it's almost the first of the month and your monthly handout will be arriving soon. Try to make it last the whole month this time.

A man who doesn't have the will to work doesn't have what it takes to make an honest living.

This guy will be fed, clothed, housed and given medical care when he goes to prison. The only thing he'll give up is freedom.

"Ranger - Perhaps the difficulty you're having in gaining employment has something to do with the antisocial and entitled attitude you project. Maybe you're making some poor choices in your life, such as choosing to maintain a computer and internet access rather than purchasing food?"

What's that expression the kids use........Oh snap!

"Wild bill, you dont sound to wild to me. You must work at one of the big plants around here.If you ever lose your job, and get hungry, you'll see my side of it."

Wrongo! I work in the construction industry, no plant, no cushy job, just hard work 40 hours a week. If I lost my job I'd not see things your way for one reason and one reason only, my mother and father taught me the difference between right and wrong, yours obviously did not.

It cracks me up that you are sitting on a computer and crying in your beer instead of being out looking for a job. Maybe if you got rid of the computer and internet access you could buy some eggs. You probably have cable too.

Maybe you can't find a job because of your attitude or qualifications.

ranger400, if you harbored the criminal then you could be charged with aiding and abetting. Then you wouldn't have to worry about your 8 eggs in the fridge. It's no wonder with your apparent attitude that you're jobless so you should have nobody to blame but yourself.

Well Geeeeeeeeee, don't suppose you twits that are defending this guy and wishing him all the best have any sympathy for the bank teller or those that work in the bank that thought they might be blown to bits at any minute. I'm sure if that had been anyone of you or one of your loved one's your comments would have been different. If this guy get's away with this, he just might do it again, and someone might really get hurt!

Tell you what..wild bill. If anyone robbed me, theyd be in for a surprise. Ive no money, half a loaf of bread. No meat.8 eggs. Very few groceries. The banks deposits are federaly insured. Obama wont let the banks fail, he keeps bailing them out. Wild bill, you dont sound to wild to me. You must work at one of the big plants around here.If you ever lose your job, and get hungry, you'll see my side of it.

I just love how there is always someone willing to defend a criminal just because they are perceived as being "desperate". I wonder if lawhater would feel the same way if someone broke into his/her house and cleaned them out?
