Olds wins AARP?award
CHARLESTON - Arthur G. Olds of St. Marys, former mayor of the Pleasants County city, was awarded the 2009 Andrus Award by AARP-West Virginia.
The Andrus Award, named in honor of Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, founder of AARP, recognizes residents who have generated positive change in their community and used their lifetime of experience for the good of all. The award was presented Tuesday night at a recognition dinner in Charleston.
Olds was unavailable for comment.
"Art Olds personifies Dr. Andrus' philosophy to 'serve and not be served' through his many activities as an AARP volunteer and as a volunteer for more than two dozen other community service organizations," said state Director Gaylene Miller. "Art is recognized for his patience and understanding in helping others," said Miller. "He is distinguished by his unselfish commitment to improving the lives of those around him, and he serves as a model for everyone on how to live a generous life."
As a Red Cross volunteer, Olds has aided in or directed more than 35 disaster operations around the United States and has managed the local chapter for more than 25 years. His years of experience working with AARP, Red Cross, Union Carbide, the West Virginia University Extension Service and other organizations have given him the unique ability to initiate programs that improve the lives of many people, Miller said.
Also nominated for the award were Dewayne and Ginnie Lowther from Williamstown. For the past eight years, the Lowthers have volunteered as communications specialists for AARP in West Virginia.
