Wood deputy hurt during chase

By Natalee Seely nseely@newsandsentinel.com
POSTED: December 9, 2009

PARKERSBURG - A Wood County sheriff's deputy was injured Tuesday on Corridor D, near the Ravenswood/West Virginia 68 exit, while apprehending a pedestrian who was running in and out of traffic.

Deputy James Greenwalt was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with a broken collarbone Tuesday evening after the incident involving a man walking near traffic near the Ravenswood exit.

Deputy Shana Modesitt was on her routine patrol when she spotted a white male walking on the road around 3:30 p.m. When Modesitt pulled over and asked him if he was OK, the individual ran away. He began running in and out of traffic and was nearly hit by a passing logging truck, said Wood County Sheriff Jeff Sandy.

When Greenwalt arrived on the scene, the man ran into his patrol car, got up and ran away again, police said. After additional law enforcement were called, the man was apprehended and taken to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries, officials said.

"The whole incident was very quick," said Sandy. "He was apprehended within five minutes after he was spotted by Deputy Modesitt. Deputy James Greenwalt tackled him to the ground and Deputy Modesitt handcuffed him."

Officials said the man had no wallet or identification on him at the time he was apprehended, but was identified later Tuesday night.

"He has been identified, but we cannot disclose his name for legal reasons. We should be able to release that information tomorrow," Sandy said Tuesday night. "Through good detective work, we were able to identify him from a grocery card he had in his pocket."

Greenwalt will be off work for a minimum of eight weeks while he recovers, Sandy said.

Job well done, Deputy Modesitt & Greenwalt! Cops are no different than any other group/class of people. You have Good ones & Bad ones and a few bad ones give the whole group a bad rep. LE, Fire and EMTs are very dangerous jobs, a person should be thankful that they are willing to lay there lives on the line for the rest of us! Useually you only see or read about the bad cops, never what the good ones do.

After a moments thought, and not being affiliated with anyone in LE in or around the Parkersburg area, it seems that when a story is posted anywhere about local LE a lot of people take advantage of being able to slam these people. (LE) I'd like to take this opportunity to THANK EACH OF THEM!! I would NOT want the job they have, and I APPRECIATE what they do and what they risk EVERY day. They are SO restricted in what their responses are permitted to be because of, basically, criminals rights. The same criminals who have VIOLATED someone elses rights. SO to all LE, Firefighters, EMT's and all other emergency response empoyee's......THANK YOU!

dear yellowjacket: you don't know Greenwalt, he is a good guy and not even close to a hot shot. get over yourself and remember, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say nothing at all.

Deputy Greenwalt is no show off. He is a hard working, dedicated guy who likely did not ever learn any tackling techniques. I doubt he was ever an athlete. Too bad he did not have a Tazer. Then no one would have been injured.

Did Greenwalt really need to tackle the guy? Sounds like another hot shot cop trying show off. And see what it got him. Out of service for 2 months.
