Police search Lubeck area for escaped suspect

By NATALEE SEELY nseely@newsandsentinel.com
POSTED: December 2, 2009

LUBECK - A helicopter and canine unit were used Tuesday night during a search for a Parkersburg man wanted in Alabama on drug charges, officials said.

By 8 p.m., Wood County Sheriff's Office called off the search for 40-year-old Roy Earl Garrett, who fled from West Virginia State Police during a traffic stop on Meldahl Road in Lubeck around 5 p.m.

"State Police stopped him on what may have been a driving on a suspended license violation. When they ran his name through the computer, they saw that he was wanted in Alabama," said Lt. Jeff Hamric with the Wood County Sheriff's Office.

"During this time, he ran away from his car and the police lost sight of him."

Wood County sheriff's deputies searched for Garrett in the Lubeck area from a helicopter, and Parkersburg Police Department brought a canine unit to aid in the search. "By now, we think it's gotten so cold that he's probably hiding with friends somewhere. He has friends all over this area," said Hamric. "We've searched several addresses, but by now he's likely holed up somewhere."

Officials said they will not resume the search with the helicopter or canine unit this morning.

Garrett is 6 feet tall, 160 pounds with blue eyes and long brown hair. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and jeans.

Officials said they did not know the specific drug charge against Garrett, but that he was not considered dangerous.

Mr. Garret may still be out in the cold. But if friends are aiding and abetting him they will also be arrested. The public should support the area Police by reporting this scums location.
