Government agencies closed for holiday

Michael Erb
POSTED: November 26, 2009

PARKERSBURG - Government agencies throughout the area will be closed today for Thanksgiving.

The city of Parkersburg announced Wednesday its offices would be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, reopening at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30.

Sanitation services will run one day behind schedule today and Friday, officials said.

The City of Williamstown will be closed today and Friday, reopening on Monday.

Postal offices also will be closed today and mail delivery will resume Friday. Banks are also closed on Thursday.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Transit Authority will be closed today and no buses will be available. Normal route schedules will resume Friday.

Wood County magistrate and circuit courts likewise will be closed today and Friday. Police, fire and emergency personnel will still operate as normal.

State offices also will be closed today and Friday.

For Christmas, Gov. Joe Manchin on Tuesday declared an additional half day off on Dec. 24, Thursday, Christmas Eve, so state workers will get the entire day off and will be paid for it. It will also make a four-day weekend.

"The holiday season is a very special time of year when families get together and spend quality time with their loved ones," Manchin said. "State employees work extremely hard each and every day, and an extra one-half day on Christmas Eve gives them more time with their loved ones, whether it is traveling for a long weekend or hosting family for dinner."

Manchin said the declaration does not create a legal holiday and has no effect on private businesses, local government or others not employed by the state.

The goverment have made cuts. They are not replacing people who retire. People who work there are taking on more work to make up for the lack of people. So they are doing with less, people just don't see it. Or maybe I should say don't want to see it. They also don't get the 4 day weekends for the holidays like the city or BCBS. There is a lot of people who can't get time off to spend with their out of town families.

It is about time that these offices to change to ten hours a day and 4 days of week.

When does government do with less? When are they going to do real cuts? Not cuts increase? But use less money this year than last.
