VIENNA - A new Vienna sporting goods store greeted customers with coffee and doughnuts.

Dunham's Sports had at its grand opening Friday morning. The store, located in the Grand Central Mall in the former Steve and Barry's, filled up quickly with customers.

Store manager Brian Bradley said they had a soft opening Thursday that was well received.

"One guy said he finally has a place where he can shop while his wife is in the mall."

The 65,000-square-foot store, the largest in the company, is a full-line store, with golf, running, hunting and bicycle lines.

The store has a golf club testing room and a trained, on-site bicycle technician.

"We are a full-line sporting goods store," said John Adkins, district manager.

Vienna Mayor David Nohe said the store fills a void in the area.

"We got calls every month asking for a sporting goods store."

In addition to opening a week prior to Black Friday, the store managed to open on the eve of buck season, which was a good draw for hunters looking for last-minute supplies.

"We have a lot of sports enthusiasts and hunters in the area," Nohe said.

Adkins said the store has about 40 employees all of whom are local.

"We hired everyone within the area, including the management staff," he said.

In addition to the grand opening in Vienna, the company was also opening two more stores Friday. Adkins said the company has opened 10 to 12 stores in the past year. Most stores are about 30,000-35,000 square feet.

The company, founded in 1937, has about 168 stores nationwide, including stores in Athens, Morgantown and Moundsville.
