CCMH receives consumer award

By JEFFREY SAULTON
POSTED: November 20, 2009

PARKERSBURG - After a one year survey, Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital was awarded the consumer choice award in a quality and image survey.

Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital CEO Mike King said the survey was not commissioned by the hospital and the naming of the hospital was a complete surprise to him.

"In October I got a call from one of our board members asking me if I'd seen the Modern Healthcare magazine," he said. "I looked and there we were in an ad about the award. It was a great way to start the day."

King said he received a letter from the Lincoln, Neb.-based National Research Corp. informing him of the results.

Pat Heiser, executive director of promotions for National Research, said the company has done the survey about hospitals in more than 300 markets over the past 14 years. This was the first year they surveyed the Parkersburg-Marietta market interviewing 340 people in the area.

"Every year, from September to August, we do surveys on hospitals across the country," he said. "We look at four areas, best doctors, best nurses, best overall quality and best image and reputation, and in this market the top hospital was Camden-Clark."

Heiser said the survey is an Internet-based survey, randomly asking people who log on to various sites to take a survey about their area from where they logged on.

Other hospitals that have won the award include Cedars-Sinai in California, the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic, Heiser said.

King said work the hospital has done to upgrade its services to patients has paid off.

"It is great to be mentioned in the same breath with a hospital like Cedars-Sinai," he said. "All we do here is for patients care. When we won this we tried to identify the one thing that made this possible and it was our entire staff."

King said over the past five years the hospital has developed new programs and completed an upgrade of the hospital facilities.

King said one of the changes they made was having nurses ask patients what they need every hour.

"In every department we ask the patients if there is anything they need," he said. "Rather than reacting when they push the call button we ask the patients if they need something. It has made an impression on the community."

Results conflict w Federal Surveys, which indicates facility should be doing better.

Consumer awards make for good press, but typically, consumer's are poor judges of quality (and cost) in healthcare. They simply don't have the appropriate info or know where to get it.

Therefore, you've got a big right up on an award based on subjective info, not hard facts.

Don't think for a minute that this indicates the provider is better than another. "Better' is subjective, 'eye of the beholder' stuff.

Camden Clark is the best hospital in this area. With nursing jobs a dime a dozen, I wouldn't be working there if I didn't feel that was true. No, we didn't get merit increases YET, but I personally would rather see the hospital delay spending that money now and save jobs later. CCMH is just starting to dig themselves out of the hole that the government has thrown them into, just like every other industry in the US. To those disgruntled employees that have posted these negative comments - I'm ashamed to work side by side with you. You should be happy you have a job during these economic times. Why don't you quit and let someone else have your job that will appreciate it and everything our administration does to keep out hospital in business. As far as the salaries of our senior administration....go check the salaries of the same positions at MMH or SJH. I'll bet they're not too far off. You get what you pay for! This is embarassing!!
