New Parkersburg police chief nominated

Jody Murphy
POSTED: November 18, 2009

PARKERSBURG - Mayor Bob Newell has appointed Joe Martin as city police chief.

Martin, a police sergeant with the city's narcotics and violent crimes taskforce, has been with the department since 1997.

Martin will be subject to confirmation at next week's city council meeting.

Newell said Martin was selected after an interview process and a discussion with the majority of members of city council. Martin, who was one four applicants from inside the department to apply for the job, takes over for Gerald Board, who retired last week.

Lt. John Young was named interim chief a week ago.

Assume all you "negative nannies" noticed Martin was named police officer of the year on two occasions, plus he served in a management capacity in both the uniform and detective divisions. In addition, he served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps. Give the guy a chance!

JCB i think you are right. Lady I know at the coffee shop said the same thing. I would think this would be a slap in the face of every city policeman to appoint a 12 year guy? And if Ginny Conlee is involved, the whole deal is dirty

I like the idea of John Young. Why all the hate for Martin?

I told you 2 weeks ago that it was going to be Martin. I was told that Ginny Conoley even typed his resume for him before the fake interview.

Isn't it amazing how the enter circle of the Parkersburg City government works. This man was picked by former, retired city police chiefs and a former pros.attorney. All hand selected by the mayor. Now if you cross the river into Belpre, they had a long process in selecting a new police chief and fire chief. They conducted interviews, tests were taken and those candidates news appeared in the paper. Not Parkersburg. Theirs is all behind closed doors. Isn't their some type of civil service board that has to be involved. Maybe city council will vote this down. The voted down folks (volunteers) that had been on the transit authority board for years. Another question is, who were the other candidates for the job? My guess is that they were all within the Parkersburg Police Dept. That's probably why nothing was said until it was all over. Good Luck Parkersburg.

The cities going to go down the tubes now, I know for a fact that he takes a little off the top when people get arrested with a little more money then he thinks they need and he likes to be a little more physical with handcuffed inmates then needed.

Yawn. This was predicted the minute Ginny Conley was named to the selection committee. Cronyism is alive and well and living in Parkersburg.

congratulations to Martin. I hope he gets things straightened out down there and get those guys to work and hold them accountable. they need discipline instead of attitude. They aren't gods.

Are you kiddin me? Joe Martin, as a high school used to bully and pick on and take the change of children at the 7-Eleven in Vienna. He was escorted out of there more than once, with his buddies. This city will hire anybody. They shouldve went outside the current force. Bob Newell wants to keep his hand in the police force after he's out of office,......what a load. That's as bad as hiring Bill Minear as police chief,..oh that already happened,....my bad.
