RIPLEY - Scotty Ullom picked off a pair of Bobby Rymer passes in the second half here Friday night at Memorial Stadium as host Ripley won the "Hatchet Game" for the third straight year, surviving rival Ravenswood, 10-7.

The Class AAA No. 9 Vikings (8-2) of head coach Jimmy Frashier had a tough battle with double-A No. 5 Ravenswood (8-2) as the two programs went scoreless through the first three quarters.

"Ravenswood came to play and we're lucky to get out with a win," said coach Frashier, whose squad was led by Seth Hamrick's game-high 117 yards rushing.

"I'm proud of our guys. We came back and had to fight through some adversity."

Thanks to a Kyle Harpold sack and forced fumble that Viking teammate David Heis recovered early in the fourth, Ripley was able to light up the scoreboard when Hamrick raced 24 yards to paydirt at 10:32 of the fourth. Justin Sorrell's extra point made it 7-0.

However, Red Devil Luke Corley returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards to the Viking 5. Chad Small then bulled his way in from 2 yards out on third-and-goal and after Tanner Hunter's extra point the game was even with 8:50 left.

After getting the pigskin back, the Vikings continued to run the ball right at Ravenswood, which lost starting quarterback Cole Starcher to injury in the third quarter. Runs by Hamrick, Ronnie Mullins, Ullom at quarterback and Adam Rutter helped the Vikings churn out yards and keep the clock rolling.

Facing a third-and-16 from the Ravenswood 17 after Red Devil Marc DeLong had a tackle-for-loss, Ullom ripped off a 12-yard gain to set up Sorrell's 22-yard game-winning field goal from the left hash.

Ravenswood, which used both Rymer and Dustin DeRito at quarterback in place of Starcher, had one last chance but it was snuffed out by Ullom's second pick of the game and Ripley ran out the final 1:34 to seal the victory.

Starcher went 7-of-10 for 101 yards in the first half, but the Red Devils couldn't find the end zone. Coach Dick Sturm's team tried a trick play on the first series of the game, but an attempted hook-and-ladder was fumbled and Ripley's David Hicks scooped it up.

Ravenswood also had a 34-yard Hunter field goal blocked by Heis and a Hunter 22-yard attempt in the second quarter went wide.

The Ripley trio of Ullom, Rutter and Mullins combined for more than 100 yards rushing while Viking receiver Ritchie Gobble had the team's longest reception of the night at 13 yards.

Ripley's defense held Ravenswood to less than 60 total yards in the second half.

The Vikings also held Corley and Starcher to less than 90 combined stripes on the ground. Corley and Rymer combined for six catches and 99 yards in the first half.
