Group plans holiday parade

By JEFFREY SAULTON
POSTED: November 7, 2009

PARKERSBURG - Veterans Day in Parkersburg will be marked with a parade that is coordinated on a rotating basis among local veterans groups.

This year's Veterans Day parade will be coordinated by AMVETS Post 34 on Green Street.

A spokeswoman for the post said the parade would line up at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in the horseshoe at Parkersburg High School. At 10 a.m. the parade will head down Washington Avenue on its way to City Park.

At City Park the veterans program will have Roger Sheppard as the master of ceremonies. Members of the AMVETS ladies auxiliary will lay a wreath at the City Park memorial.

Bands from Parkersburg, Parkersburg South and Williamstown high schools will be part of the parade as well as Junior ROTC members from Parkersburg and Parkersburg South high schools.

In addition to all area veterans posts, other groups participating will be the Korean Wart Veterans, Purple Heart recipients the 1092nd Engineers and the Parkersburg Police Department.

There will be a black horse pulling a cason.

Other posts will have open houses on Wednesday.

Gene Stump, quartermaster of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8127 in Vienna, said in addition to participating in the parade, they will have an open house from noon to 6 p.m.

A spokeswoman for Commander Peter Brown of VFW 1212 said they will serve fish sandwiches all day. Brown will lead a ceremony at 1 p.m. that will include a reading of "In Flander's Field," which was written during World War I.

Disabled American Veterans Post 34 at 524 Green St. will have an open house on Wednesday.

The Veterans Museum of the Mid-Ohio Valley will hold a grand opening at 1 p.m. Wednesday at its new location at 1829 Seventh St., Parkersburg. Two Parkersburg High School students, Phyllis Smith and Kenisa Davis, will receive scholarships from the museum of $750 each, Director Gary Ferris said.

To qualify for the scholarship, students participate in a docent program at the museum, read three books and write essays, he said.

Tours will be given, he said.

A special Veterans Day program is scheduled for the Belpre Senior Center, 1614 Washington Blvd., at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The theme will be "Remembering Courage, Honoring Sacrifice."

The program will include a presentation by the color guard from American Legion Post 495, with Sergeant-of-Arms Bill Harpold. Other participants include Bob McDonald, chaplain of Post 495; Rosy Niday, president of the women's auxiliary, and Flo Harpold, secretary. Piano music will be provided by Garnett Foutty and Clairbelle Lohr as well as a visit from "Uncle Sam."

"Too often, it appears that Nov. 11 is just 'another holiday,' a day off work perhaps or special sales," said Susie Casto, manager of the Belpre Senior Center. "We want to mark the true significance of the day as we have a number of former soldiers now involved at the senior center as well as friends and family members deployed throughout the world."

A lunch of vegetable soup or chili will be available after the program. Suggested donation is $2.50 for the lunch.

I just want to make a comment about American Legion Post 15 . There is a group of men there "The Honor Guard" that work almost everyday (funerals of fallen soldiers, marines ,airmen & sailors)sometimes they do 3 funerals a day. In the heat , rain , snow and cold . Any Funeral Director will tell you if a family requests Military Honors for their family members funeral (in PKB area) the 1st call they make is to the Legion , because we are loosing our WW2 and Korean not to forget our Viet Nam guys at a fast clip. God Bless you gentlemen and carry on.P.S. Walleye don't worry Post 15 will be well represented on Veterans Day.

The wreath laying is by all local Ladies Auxiliary chapters, not just the AMVETS. Also the DAV is not Post 34, but Post 6.
