PARKERSBURG - Wirt County finally put away Williamstown, but it took the Tigers to the fifth game of the final championship match of the Class A Region I, Section 2 volleyball tournament Wednesday night at Parkersburg Catholic High School.

The 22-25, 25-20, 27-25, 16-25, 15-12 victory over the Yellowjackets lets Wirt (21-14-3) enter the Region 2 tournament on its own floor in Elizabeth at 6 p.m. Saturday as the Section 2 champion. And Williamstown (25-11-4) will join them there by virtue of its sectional runner-up finish.

But the 'Jackets had to play three back-to-back-to-back matches Wednesday night in an effort to win the sectional, and got as far as they could before falling.

First, Williamstown ousted host Catholic 25-16, 25-9, 23-25, 25-19 in the losers' bracket final, ending the Crusaders' season at 19-22.

Then the 'Jackets stunned top seed Wirt in the first sectional title match, sweeping the Tigers 25-17, 25-19, 25-13 to force a second and deciding match for the sectional crown.

And after four games in title tilt No. 2, the teams were even at two games each with the fifth game to just 15 set to decide the regional matchups.

The final game of the night began at 10:48 p.m. Wirt led all the way except for a 1-1 tie, but had to stave off the determined 'Jackets throughout. The Tigers led 7-3 and 9-4 before two spike points by Liz Flowers and another by Shannon Cieslewski closed the gap to 10-8. After 11-10 and 12-11 scores, a dink by Wirt's Megan Ellison made it 13-11 and Williamstown never got any closer.

In Catholic's loss, Carrie Roedersheimer and Ty Hansen led the Crusaders with eight points each, followed by Lindsey Fasching with six. Fasching also led PC in hits (32 of 43) and kills (11).

In Williamstown's three matches Wednesday, Flowers tallied 38 points with nine aces, while Taylor Saunders added 37 points and Katie Stewart 23. In hitting, Flowers was 63 of 83 with 31 kills.
