School levy, beer sales pass in Belpre
From staff reportsArticle Links
» View election photos on CUBELPRE - The city of Belpre is no longer completely dry.
For the first time since Prohibition, voters in some of Belpre's districts approved the sale of beer at two convenience stores and a restaurant, but drew the line at allowing alcohol sales on Sundays.
Belpre voters also approved the renewal of the current operating levy in place in Belpre City Schools District.
The alcohol issues include sales of beer to be consumed off premises for the Speedway at the intersection of Farson Street and U.S. 50 and the Speedway on Washington Boulevard and for Sunday sales of beer at those locations.
Voters approved beer sales at the Washington Boulevard location by 183 votes for to 169 votes against, but turned down Sunday sales with 153 votes for and 199 votes against.
Voters approved beer sales at the Farson Street location by 142 votes for to 120 votes against, but again turned down Sunday sales with 126 votes for and 135 votes against.
Voters also approved the other issue on the ballot, to permit the sale of beer and wine for on-premises consumption at Napoli's restaurant on Main Street. The issue was approved with 242 votes for and 186 votes against.
All of the alcohol issues are to be voted on by the people living in those voting precincts only.
In the Little Hocking North district, voters approved the sale of alcoholic beverages at the Marathon Food Center by 109 votes for and 94 votes against. Sunday sales at that location were defeated with 91 votes for and 115 votes against.
The school levy issue is a renewal of the current five-year $825,000 operating levy taxpayers voted to renew in 2004 and will be no added taxes on residents in the district.
The levy was first adopted in March 2000 and a simple majority is required for passage.
"This is just a renewal of a levy (taxpayers) already pay," Superintendent Harry Fleming has previously said. "There will be no new money for them to pay."

Belpre moves forward. Times change. City council should be thinking ahead and have the ordinances is place to dictate what kinds of establishments can sell booze. (size structure, brick front, paved parking, etc.). If not, they could wind up like a many of river towns up and down Rt 7 with a beer joints in every old garage, old store, or run-down building along the highway. It is also time for a first class restaurant to open, with a good wine list, and a river view.

But, that was true before November 3rd's vote. Are we going to get the needed police officers? Probably not. But that (at this time) has nothing to do with Belpre voting in beer sales. As to alchol sales taxes and permits... They are not going to "save Belpre". Yes, they will generate some revenue, but not to an extent of having any great financial effect on the City. I'm not trying to take either a pro or con on the alcohol issue at this time. It's still too early, in my opinion, to make a realistic conclusion. And, the effect of alcohol sales in the City will depend on future permits and their types. The door has been cracked open, now we wait to see what comes through it in the future.

First off... Kudos on passing the school levy. Though I don't like being taxed any more than the next guy, it is a necessary levy that will help the community in the long run. As to beer sales.... Please, everyone, calm down. I do not believe that allowing carry-out beer sales in two gas stations and a in-house consumption restaurant are going to significantly increase crime or jeopardize the security of the City. The key is the future sales and permits over the next 5-15 years. If permits and their numbers are not prudently checked, there could be future problems. But at this juncture, I don't foresee a real issue in relation to alcohol-related crime(s). More police needed?... Yes. We do need two officers based on national statistics for the City's size and geographic locale....

OMG! It can't be! Did I read this right! Belpre is finally selling beer in it's fair hamlet? So that would mean that Walkerville is finally burning to the ground? Quick someone get a hose but don't turn the water on! I did not think that this would happen in my lifetime, but alas, it has. Maybe...just maybe...Belpre can arise from these ashes and be who she is suppose to be, a thriving, productive town. Now I know all the Christians are upset, but this to well pass!

belpremommy,if you don't like alcohol don't buy it,but people that like alcohol should have the right to buy it,this is called FREEDOM, i assume most people against this issue are the moral right christians and my problem with the moral right christians is the same freedoms they have to worship are the same freedoms they try to step on when it comes to people who do not believe and think the way they do.live and let live.

I can't imagine why an additional patrolman and car would be necessary as a result of the passage of the beer/wine issue. Drinkers will continue to drink as they always have and actually the only thing that will change is where they can buy it. Not sure I understand the logic of needing more cops because of it. On a sad note, this will mean a little less revenue for Parkersburg/West Virginia. But then, those who prefer liquor will still be traveling our way. Geez, beer, wine, gambling..all you need now is a atrip club and you'd be just like the rest of America.

Why would Belpre need another cop just because they will now sell beer one mile closer? Folks can get beer in Pburg or right down Joe Skinner Rd. (which is about 3 or 4 miles away)

to all of you naysayers, i was told by someone who is fairly close to the mayor of belpre that there would be a need for another patrolman based on information gathered from other cities that have passed similar laws in the past few years. and i guess all of the sales tax gathered from you beer loving hillbillies with your wild turkey will support the cost of the new car.

Wow - what happened? Someone sabotaged the buses coming from the senior citizens home? Good plan! Remember this for the next election! Pay for an extra patrolman and an extra car? What a load of crap. Get over yourself, mommy.

See mathewBB..you are making belpremommy look like a genius...if you make it a point to stop in belpre to buy beer..then that is adding traffic and hence another patrolman will be needed! actually..it will probably cut down on traffic...since before everybody had to drive to parkersburg or that little store on 7 down by the river to buy beer..now they will have to drive less since they can buy it closer to home and ergo less traffic and maybe belpre can lose a patrolman...that will save belpre tax $..but then again..it will raise the unemployment and that patrolman will have to move to find work and you will lost the $ he pays in taxes....round, and round, and round, and round we go...bottom line....mmmmm....beer!

I guess that is what makes "ohio drivers"...most areas you can go within 5 miles of the speed limit without being harrassed by cops. Not in Belpre! That is what I meant by speed traps.
