GSC looks to play spoiler role
By JAY W. BENNETT, jbennett@newsandsentinel.comPARKERSBURG - A season's worth of work could slip right through the University of Charleston's hands this weekend.
Sixth-year Glenville State College head football coach Alan Fiddler's squad will be looking for an upset come 1 p.m. Saturday when the visiting Pioneers try to leapfrog the Golden Eagles in the West Virginia Conference standings.
UC head coach Tony DeMeo's program survived a triple-overtime game in Raleigh, N.C., earlier this year in a 43-41 win versus St. Augustine's. However, last weekend WVIAC leader West Liberty recovered UC quarterback DaRante Hunter's fumble to seal a 48-42 double-overtime upset.
With a victory on Saturday inside the University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field the Pioneers not only would stun the No. 17 Golden Eagles (8-1, 5-1 WVIAC), but it would give GSC a four-game winning streak and improve the Pioneers to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play heading into next Thursday's 8 p.m. nationally televised home game against Shepherd.
"We've had three good wins," Fiddler said of his team, which hasn't tasted defeat since a 29-17 home loss to West Liberty.
"We're happy with that and we're just trying to finish strong and have a good year."
In order for the G-men to reach a four-game winning streak, coach Fiddler knows his team has to stop the option running attack of Hunter and UC.
"It's just guys being disciplined and relearning their assignments a little bit," Fiddler added. "It's doing things they aren't used to doing."
For the most part, aside from having about a half dozen players under the weather this week, the Pioneers are ready to go. However, junior fullback/special teams player Chase Moore was lost for the season during last week's 54-30 triumph against West Virginia Wesleyan with a broken arm.
"Chase had surgery Saturday night in Morgantown and had to have two plates and a couple of screws," Fiddler noted. "It was one of those freak accidents when he was returning a short kickoff."
Coach Fiddler knows the best way for his team to come out on top Saturday is for the G-men to, "play with a lot of energy and come out and play well.
"If we take care of the football we are pretty good. When we don't turn it over we've done very well. I think that's the big key and we've got to be fundamentally sound to stop the option."
Stopping the running game of UC won't be easy considering coach DeMeo's team is ranked fourth nationally by averaging a little more than 285 yards on the ground each contest. GSC's rush defense is giving up less than 143 stripes on the ground this year and the Pioneers also will look to control the clock with a 28th ranked run offense that puts up 187 yards each week.
The UC defense, which features former Parkersburg all-stater Joey Lindamood (10th on the team with 23 tackles) at linebacker, also will have to contend with GSC signal-caller James McCants. McCants tossed four touchdown passes last week, a pair to Penn State transfer James McDonald and one each to Antwan Stewart and Xavier Glenn.
