South Parkersburg club seeks video lottery

By JODY MURPHY jmurphy@newsandsentinel.com
POSTED: October 21, 2009

PARKERSBURG - A southside club is seeking an appeal to add limited video lottery to its establishment.

The Log Cabin Club on Pike Street is requesting an appeal by the city's zoning administrator for a variance to add limited video lottery to its tavern at 1600 Pike St.

The city's Board of Zoning Appeals will entertain the club's request at today's 6:30 p.m. meeting in the city building.

Assistant Zoning Administrator Lydia White said the club's was denied the request because of its proximity to a church as well as another limited video lottery establishment.

White said city code does not allow a video lottery establishment within 1,500 feet of a church or another video lottery establishment.

"They are within a few hundred feet of a church and they are also 1,200-to-1,300 feet from another establishment," White said.

The club also abuts a residential-zoned district. White said even though there are residences in the area, it has a large commercial section.

Attempts to contact Nelva Lewis, owner of the Log Cabin Club, were unsuccessful.

White said the city has not received many complaints on the matter.

"I don't expect a lot opposition," she said. "I don't think people are too excited about it."

The city's BZA has previously granted limited video lottery variances to the Parkersburg Elks, the Six Pence Pub and Eatery and Garfield's Restaurant.

Instead of adding more gaming sites, I think we should get rid of all of them !

People aren't 'too excited about it' because they know the city code in this matter has no teeth and the BZA (Board of Zoning for Addicts) will gladly permit more machines.
