PARKERSBURG - A Logan, Ohio, man died and three others were injured after a boating accident Saturday on the Ohio River near Hockingport.

Guy Unger Jr., 24, was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital shortly after the boat he was riding in crashed into an empty docked houseboat shortly before 5 p.m., said Sgt. Clyde Armstead with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. The houseboat was docked about a mile north of Hockingport in Athens County.

Three passengers on the boat were taken to area hospitals. Seth Cramer, 25, of Rockbridge, Ohio, had a broken femur but remained in stable condition Tuesday at Cabell-Huntington Hospital, said Armstead.

A cousin of Cramer, 27-year-old Shawn Cramer of Logan, and friend Adam Lehmans were treated at area hospitals and released Saturday.

Armstead said the fiberglass runabout boat registered to Seth Cramer was driving at a very high speed when it crashed into the houseboat, causing a fuel leak on the houseboat.

On Tuesday, DNR officials were at the scene pulling the runabout boat out of the water.

"It was still at the scene tethered to the dock where the accident occurred," said Armstead. "It was still floating, so we managed to pull it out of the water."

The DNR is still investigating the cause of the accident.

Armstead said there were life jackets on the boat, but he does not believe the four men were wearing them. He said no citations have been issued and officials will not know whether drugs and alcohol were involved in the accident until the investigation is complete.

The accident comes about two months after a fatal boating accident near Blennerhassett Island that claimed the life of a father and son, 50-year-old David Midcap and 20-year-old Jeremy Midcap.

Officials remind boaters to stay safe during the last weeks of summer. The DNR offers a free boating safety course, and boat navigation courses are offered in the spring and fall by the Mid-Ohio Valley Power Squadron.
